The only irreplaceable data that I posses is digital home videos and digital photos of the family/kids. I have a lot, but it's super easy to back up to an external HDD that I keep locked up at work. To protect against HDD failure between those monthly off-site backups, I replicate the data partition on our main PC to a second PC in my house using a scheduled Sync Toy job.

Chrome Remote Desktop doesn't have all the bells and whistles that LogMeIn has, but it's simple and works well.

Show marketing a few high profile breach stories, tell them that you won't be surprised if you're next. They probably aren't aware of the risk, and will re-prioritize initiatives if you educate them.

This device makes it possible to see who is calling with a quick glance, and take brief incoming calls ("What time will you be here?", or "Don't forget to pick up Kylee" sort of stuff). That seems much safer than fishing your phone out of your pocket or purse, and holding a device in your hand.

Also, I'm not clear on something.. can you invoke the voice system on this device? In other words, can I speak into this device, "Text Caroline we skipped out of the show comma see you at ten oclock period"? If so, even better.

Because everyone here seems to be running with the "10 hour" number, which from what I can tell, is just speculation.

If it's indeed 10 hours, then that's pretty weak, but I suspect it's more. Also, I don't think this watch is designed to be used for lots of long phone conversations, for that, people will use their phone. It's more suitable for quick incoming calls.

I work from home on the slowest Fios connection (15/5), and it's more than plenty for me. Its much faster than my office building's internet connection. I move around fairly large data sets, download dvd images, content with a household full of HD streamers and Spotify/Pandora listeners, and have never felt like I needed more bandwidth.

If you were to believe Verizon's propaganda, I should probably be using their 300/65 or 500/100 speeds. Those are fast connections, but a lot of services will only send you data at a fixed rate, and net download speed may not be faster than what I'm seeing already.

/.ers are fast to criticize non-it pros for attempting tech. This guy sounds fairly competent, and this isn't an extraordinarily difficult task.

AC, Your excuses are weak sauce.

- There are other large cars besides the crown vic.

- You can rent large cars for big trips, or take umbrella strollers, or borrow strollers from friends at the destination, (or deal without, gasp!). You can't tell me that you justify having an SUV because you need to move a stroller around.

- It's possible to rent trucks from hardware stores, they cost very little. UHaul and Penske trucks are cost effective ways to move large objects as well. I tend to get things delivered, and sometimes borrow friends trucks.

- Engine size: not even worth arguing.

- A $125 Saris Bones bike rack will work on 95% of vehicles (image search it if you don't believe me), equally inexpensive options exist for the other 5%.

- You have the cause/effect backwards. It's not, "we drive SUVs because there are fewer wagons", more like: "there are fewer wagons because drive SUVs". Volvo stopped importing the V70, for example, due to declining sales (they still import the XC70 "off road wagon" though). Subaru stopped importing the Legacy wagon (they still import the Outback wagon). Sales of these vehicles are strong abroad. This is about vanity and excessiveness, not practicality or reasonableness.

- My spare tire isn't full sized, but it is full diameter. I've used it once in 10 years, and it worked great. No issues.

For the record, I have a wife, two young children, and a large dog. I drive a seven passenger Volvo V70 station wagon. My thoughts on my swedish meatball:
It's around 33% more energy efficient than most SUVs. This alone is huge.
It accelerates faster, stops shorter, and handles better than most SUVs.
It is less likely to roll over than an SUV in an accident.
It goes offroad more often than most SUVs. It does just fine. (we camp a lot)
Between the cavernous interior space plus my 18 CuFt Thule Cascade roof cargo box, I believe that I can haul just as much cargo than most SUVs. Plenty for me (and if I needed more space, I'd rent a van for said trip).

Wow, this really strikes a nerve. I worked as a financial systems developer for a large construction firm for close to a decade. They had a fantastic culture, it was a really great place to work; until our CIO was replaced by someone from GE who promptly implemented stack ranking. We literally wasted ~20 hours per person over a couple weeks working on (and refining) our "internal resumes". I would consider my ten person team to be very high performing, and at the end of the process, I was basically told that I was mediocre, and needed to step it up or risk serious repercussions. A few weeks later, and after demoralizing just about everyone in IT, she announced a "voluntary separation" program. Coincidentally, that same day, I pulled the trigger on another position (at a large software company) and I turned in my separation paperwork 15 minutes after I received the forms. I was denied for the program because I was an "exceptional performer". I asked how I could be both mediocre and exceptional at the same time, and never got a good answer. Of course I left anyway, and never looked back. The new CIO didn't make it a year.
