An anonymous reader writes: With over 3000 visitors one of the biggest computer festivals, the Assembly 2007, just closed doors. The event saw the release of some of the best demoscene productions of this year. Among them the first good demos for the XBOX 360, but also for platforms as obscure as the Atari VCS2600 from 1976. The main demo competition was won by Lifeforce, one of the most acclaimed demoscene demos ever. Other releases can be found here.

An anonymous reader writes: A U.S. federal jury found that Microsoft Corp. infringed audio patents held by Alcatel-Lucent and should pay $1.52 billion in damages, Microsoft said Thursday. The news comes after reports that U.S. Supreme Court justices expressed doubts about whether Microsoft Corp. should be liable for infringing AT&T Inc. patents in Windows software sold overseas. Despite the news, shares of Microsoft closed 4 cents higher, at $29.39, on Thursday.

Bob Roswell writes: "I sent all my employees an HTML Email. The subject line said "Daylight Savings Time: Please login Below" and the body of email was a reasonable facsimile of the Outlook Web Access Login Screen. I sent the email from outside the company, but changed the from address to the email address of our internal support. About 1/3 of the employees logged into the web form which recorded their usernames and passwords. Fewer than 5% contacted internal support or their co-workers to warn them about the phishing attack. I guess our firewalls, VPNs, and training are not very good. Time to use multi factor logins?"

An anonymous reader writes: 2007 is shaping up to be the most exciting year since the community drove off the XML highway into the Web services swamp half a decade ago. XQuery, Atom, Atom Publishing Protocol (APP), XProc, and GRRDL are all promising new power. Some slightly older technologies like XForms and XSLT are having new life breathed into them. 2007 will be a very good year to work with XML. See what's in store for XML this year.

brain1 writes: Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSWEN46512 0070222) is reporting that Microsoft was hit with a $1.52 Billion patent suit damages. Looks like Microsoft lost even they licensed MP3 technology from Fraunhofer in Germany. This doesn't bode well for fighting software patents, but Microsoft seems to have been bitten by their own game.

This looks like a good time to switch to Ogg Vorbis!

The information on creating your own Debian packages, and where things stand with RPM generated lots of discussion on best practices while overviews of Klik, InstallJammer, Zero Install, and Autopackage gave lots of useful tips and pointers. Gentoo's Portage was omitted from the special report this time around but apparently will be covered at some point in the future."
