I have little trouble entering Hanzi with a standard keyboard, and your typical Chinese person has even less.

You might recall that Chinese consists of a large number of related but mutually unintelligible "dialects". A Beijinger visiting Hong Kong might pronounce it "Jiulong", but he can still read the sign that tells him he's arrived in "Nine Dragons"--or, as the locals pronounce it--Kowloon.

For that matter, handwriting recognition works quite well these days. Very handy when you're out and about and you see a character you don't know--just trace it on the screen of your smartphone with your finger, and up it pops in your dictionary, with the meaning and pronunciation. (NB: You *must* know the stroke order rules for writing Chinese characters for this to work. You don't have to write the character especially neatly, but the strokes need to have the correct order and placement.)

I'm not saying I *prefer* an ideographic writing system, just that what you're alluding to is already (AFAICT) a solved problem.

I'm glad someone else noticed that. Not that it applies to me, since I've already learnt how to say "I can't eat crustaceans--I'm allergic" in about 12 languages.

Do you always take everything to the most extreme, absurd conclusion? If someone recommends reducing calorie intake to lose weight, do you advocate eliminating calorie intake completely, which will result in death and even greater weight loss through decomposition of the body?

In any case, slowing traffic is just one way that narrowed lanes increase safety. Another is in reducing road crossing times by pedestrians, which reduces their exposure to cars. Another is in making drivers "feel" less comfortable and making them concentrate on their driving rather than just speeding along without needing to pay much attention at all to staying in their lane (or looking out for other road users). Transportation planners have spent the past few decades making streets exceptionally safe for cars, at the expense of pedestrians and cyclists. But as cities get more crowded and it becomes more difficult to accommodate cars when city streets have no room to expand, planners are realizing that streets need to accommodate *all* users, not just cars.

That's like naming a software project OpenOffice.org. It's just asking for some level of confusion just to be cute (okay, oo.org was an attempt to alleviate confusion about .org vs .com domain name, but you get my drift). Call it what it is: the Great systemd Con.

Then they'd have to convert their estimated yards to feet to see whether the drone pilot's claim made sense. GP was being kind to do the English conversions to matching English units. The raw numbers are easier to compare than imagined distances.

I stayed on KDE3 for a long time, but 4 finally got to where I could stand to use it. I actually still prefer Konqueror as a FM, but Dolphin became "good enough" (for me, at least) around version 4.7 or so.

I have never liked Gnome very much, more recent versions even less.

I also still have a special place in my heart for Window Maker--it's simple and easy on resources, which is great for older hardware and laggy remote sessions. Also in part because I know one of the original developers.

That would mean that 200ft was actually 250ft. (0 would have been 50ft) More likely: the altimeter wasn't calibrated. I haven't seen the video yet, but it would be interesting to see what the height registered when it was at human head-height (5-7 ft).
