Submission + - Adam Lanza's Asperger's, Autism Cannot Be Blamed for CT School Shooting, Experts 1

An anonymous reader writes: Did Adam Lanza's Asperger's syndrome have anything to do with his murderous rampage that claimed 28 lives? Authorities investigating the tragedy said that the 20-year-old gunman in the Connecticut elementary school shooting had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism characterized by difficulties in social interaction. Since the latest details of Lanza's mental health have surfaced, many have been quick to tie his mental disorder to his actions.

Submission + - Single Microbe May Have Triggered World's Largest Mass Extinction (medicaldaily.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: About 251 million years ago, 90 percent of the Earth's species became extinct. The mass extinction, called the "Great Dying" or the more scientific-sounding Permian-Triassic extinction event, made 96 percent of marine animals and 70 percent of land-dwelling animals extinct in just a few thousand years, and it took the earth as much as 10 million years to regain the biodiversity that it had lost. Researchers believe that they may finally know why the event occurred, but the theory is not without controversy.
There are several theories, including the possibility of a meterorite hitting the planet. Previously, most researchers believed that the Permian mass extinction was a result of a series of volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia. These eruptions would have caused a dramatic rise in the amount of greenhouse gases which would have, in turn, killed off a bulk of species.
However, Daniel Rothman from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is floating around a different theory. As he presented in a meeting for the American Geophysical Union, he believes that the mass extinction could have been caused by something much smaller. His theory is that the extinction was caused by a single strain of bacteria.

With constant inflation, I'm pretty sure at some point the $5, $10, $20, etc bills will also stop making economic sense, which is kinda ridiculous. Maybe this is a transitional thing on the way to digital currency? Or people are thinking that with the population starting to level off that constant inflation will be less important?

Native Texan, here. I don't support Secession by any means, but at least read the petition before you label us all as racists.

The summary doesn't make any mention of Obama or Race, and is instead about things like the NDAA, the TSA, the Patriot Act, etc. While I doubt it would have appeared (and gotten nearly so many votes) had Romney won the election, I think the vast majority of Slashdotters would actually agree with most of the listed grievances (whether or not one thinks the stated motivations are the only ones).

Submission + - Puerto Rico Votes to become US State (cnn.com)

who_stole_my_kidneys writes: In an overshadowed Election Day contest, Puerto Ricans voted in favor of statehood in a nonbinding referendum, marking the first time such an initiative garnered a majority.
Puerto Ricans were asked about their desires in two parts. First, by a 54% to 46% margin, voters rejected their current status as a U.S. commonwealth. In a separate question, 61% chose statehood as the alternative, compared with 33% for the semi-autonomous "sovereign free association" and 6% for outright independence.

I had to wait in line for a good 45 minutes, and voted without issue. We used electronic machines, but the input was buttons and a click wheel rather than touch.

One guy ran into trouble, since he had just moved to a different county and wasn't in their system. He still had a lease on an apartment, so he was planning on trying to edge his way into a booth by responding to "Have you moved recently" with "I have an apartment across the street".

I've considered getting a tablet in the past, but found it hard to justify having in addition to my gaming/dev desktop, my laptop, and my phone. The laptop is getting long in the tooth, but I'm not really sure that an iPad or Android Tablet can fully replace it for things like work and traditional games (aka stuff from Good Old Games) while I'm traveling.

The Surface seems like it might actually be a good replacement for my laptop, while scratching my tablet itch. Plus, I'm kinda excited by the idea that I could write personal-use Tablet Apps on a Tablet :P

Of course, this is all contingent on good reviews, and maybe a decent alternative to the flimsy keyboard/cover.

Full Disclosure: My employer is owned by Microsoft.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Where should a geek's charitable donations go? 5

An anonymous reader writes: I'm in the position to direct (or at least suggest the direction of) a fairly large amount of charitable donation on behalf of a foundation interested in promoting education. As a lifelong geek, I'd like to see some of this money directed toward organizations involved in things geeks like (e.g. spreading technology in education to those without it, improving the use of technology for those who have it, etc.). If it was up to you, what charitable organizations would you support and why?
