And you are not doing these people any favours by telling them they should use some other environment instead, because if Gnome is 95% perfect then KDE, Xfce, Blackbox, etc. will all be worse for them.

Too bad that +5 is the highest moderation you can get. I think this one sentence sums up the situation better than all of the other posts I have read. I, too, am a Gnome user and do not like the direction it is going. The two most common scenarios I see are:

  1. A Gnome user complains about the direction Gnome is going and is told by the developers that

sorry, but you are not the target user.
Their target user appears to be someone who has never used a computer before — basically, no one who has been using Gnome since the beginning.
  2. Someone complains about Gnome in a public forum and is told

if you don't like Gnome, use KDE.
If I had wanted to use KDE, I would. KDE thinks that if 5 options are good, then 100, poorly organized, poorly documented options are that much better. I detest KDE.

So where does that leave us, the dispossessed Gnome users? I wish I knew.

Submission + - Dell 300WFP-HC 92% Color Gamut, 30" LCD Tested

Spinnerbait writes: "When it comes to high-end wide screen computer LCDs, Dell's UltraSharp line has historically earned high marks. If you're in the market for something huge, you should check out this article at HotHardware on Dell's new UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC. Not only does this monitor feature a gigantic 30" panel with a native resolution of 2560x1600, but it also features ultra high 92% color gamut capability based on new backlighting technology that is currently one of the industry's best. Most other desktop LCD monitors feature a 72% to 76% color gamut. The UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC is going to be somewhat expensive, and at first will only be available with the purchase of an XPS system. The word is, general availability will come in February. Drool...."

Submission + - US Software Patents Have No Right to Cover Activit

PatPending writes: FTA: The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC), provider of pro-bono legal services to protect and advance Free and Open Source Software, has filed a brief with the United States Supreme Court arguing against the patenting of software.

In its brief, SFLC argues that software copied and distributed outside the United States cannot infringe U.S. patents. The brief also argues that the Federal Circuit's decisions declaring software to be patentable subject matter conflict with Supreme Court precedent and, as such, should be overruled.

Submission + - BLAST Telescope about to Launch from Antarctica

mtruch writes: "BLAST, the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope is about to be launched from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. BLAST is a 2700 kg telescope with a 2 meter primary mirror that hangs from a 1.1 million cubic metre balloon floating at an altitude of 38 km that will study the star formation history of the universe. It will float west at nearly constant latitude for about 14 days until it is (hopefully) located over McMurdo again and will be terminated and recovered. Real time position and flight track is available from the CSBF. Watch the launch live via a crappy webcam link. Three of the graduate students working on the project have photo blogs of much of the prep period, and specifically Don's blog should have launch photos soon (bandwidth to/from McMurdo is at a premium).

BLAST made it on slashdot in the past, when it launched from Sweden in June 2005, and indirectly with an interview with Prof. Barth Netterfield and George Staikos. Yes, the flight computers still run Slack, and yes, we still use kst for data viewing and analysis. There is Discovery Science show about BLAST and high-altitude balloons, and a future documentary film being made about BLAST."

Submission + - DISH NETWORK

wojtalsd writes: Sorry if the topic is off but I need to see who else this has happened to... Also ideas would be grateful. We moved into our new house and tried to get DirecTV, The wait was for a few months so we opted to go with Dish Network. So we went on to there website and setup the installation dates. So far so good. A couple weeks later they came to do the install. When hooking up the DVR in the living room and doing the final programming they found out the DVR firmware was corrupted. They then brought out another one, same issues. Finally a third DVR came out of it's box.... tada! It works! So they box up the two "dead" DVR's and put it in the truck. Everything worked great until the UPS guy drops off two box's. We called up Dish and they told us to turn in our two DVR's. We told them the story and once again we thought we were good. A week later a UPS guy drives up and asks for the DVR's. Once again I call Dish. They said everything is taken care of. YEAH! Two weeks after that our Dish bill comes in charging $800 for the two DVR's. Yet again another call to Dish... They once again said they will take care of it. Just to be sure, we canceled the instant pay off of our credit card. Well then today comes... They decided to charge the card we first started the service with. So since 1200 to 727pm my wife has been arguing with them. They have know told her that we cant do anything about it till after the holidays. We tried to get our bank to stop the charges but it is still pending. Any ideas? Merry Christmas to us! Thanks DISH NETWORK!
