This isn't about printing nano scale action figures it's about making nano scale prototype parts. It may not be true nano scale printing as some point out but it's close and still printing on a scale which would require extremely expensive hardware. A few years ago there was no such things as 3D printing and now they are printing at several thousandth scale. How long until they are printing based on individual atoms?

Other than the Xbox and that's had a rocky ride Microsoft's track record with hardware is miserable. They've been the mirror image of Apple. Apple has had a few products like Apple TV that haven't taken off but few actual flops. Microsoft keeps playing catch up making it incredibly hard when the market is already full. Last to the market with a music player and it flopped and now last to the market with a smart phone and shock of shocks it flopped. They would have been better off using their leg up with Xbox to try to beat Apple to market with a smart TV. If Apple does come out with a smart TV in the next 12 months what are the odds Microsoft will 3 years from now and what are the odds of it flopping? They have to stop chasing after the market and start leading. It doesn't matter how hard you work on the barn when the horse left three to five years ago.

It may seem like it but Apple doesn't need China. Even with the stock buy back and dividends Apple has over 110 billion in the bank. Building their own factories and moving back to the US or a friendlier country would slightly reduce their massive profits. The good will could actually increase sales enough to offset the costs if they moved back to the US. Unless they think of something to do with the money they will likely have in excess of 200 billion in the bank by 2020. They could easily finance 10 missions to Mars so moving back the the US would barely dent their war chest.

I still can't believe you morons elected him. Twice.

And Republicans got the spending and subsidy king Bush elected twice. The deficit has been dropping since Obama took office, the stock market has recovered from the Bush disaster and unemployment is dropping inspite of a do nothing Congress lead by Republicans. There are only really two options, life is an unlikely fluke or it's everywhere it can possibly exist. Life may be more pervasive than anyone thought possible. The dogma has been that where life is possible it's still rare but the more likely truth is systems where like can exist but doesn't may be the rare exceptions.

Ok. So I'm assuming this is for people that aren't supporting datacenter based equipment. Y'know the guys that have to plug in thousands of powercords...

So if you're outfitting your cube/desk area, how many keyboards and power cords do you go through? Also, do most FB employees standardize on the 'vending machine' keyboard, or do they have their own personal preference?

I can tell you I wear out a keyboard in about three months and before I switched to "cheapie" Logitech mice, $10 a pop, I was burning through expensive mice every other month. It all depends on how much work you do. After two months the "A" on my keyboard is badly worn and at three months a dozen keys are showing wear. I would say keyboard wear is a good sign of how much work you do. If you can last two or three years on a keyboard you are probably over paid.
