Submission + - Linode hacked, CCs and passwords leaked 6

An anonymous reader writes: On Friday Linode announced a precautionary password reset due to an attack despite claiming that they were not compromised. The attacker has claimed otherwise, claiming to have obtained card numbers and password hashes. Password hashes, source code fragments and directory listings have been released as proof. Linode has yet to comment on or deny these claims.

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but the US is not the only country in the world. If its the flagship everywhere else, we should consider it THE flagship. I'm curious, does the carrier exclusivity expire in the US? Or will the 920 only ever be available from one carrier? This kind of practice has always seemed to me like it should be illegal...or severely limited.

Submission + - Curiosity Rover landed on Mars Safely and Started sending Images of Mars. (blogspot.in)

rtoz writes: "Nasa's has announced that Curiosity Rover has landed on Mars Safely.

Nasa Engineers celebrated this major achievement.

U.S President Barack Obama on Curiosity: "Tonight, on the planet Mars, the United States of America made history."

Soon after the landing, the first images came from Curiosity’s cameras, showing pebbles, dust, and the shadow of the rover on the surface of Mars.

It seems this thumbnail sized black and white image is just a test picture taken by the Cameras of Curiosity to test the Image taking and sending functionalists. We may expect high quality images later.

Over its two-year initial mission, Curiosity will drill, sample, and laser-shoot rocks on the Martian surface to figure out what minerals and elements they contain. In particular, the probe will search for organic carbon that could indicate fossilized life forms. Even more exciting, the rover will also sniff the Martian atmosphere for gasses such as methane that could be a sign of present-day life.

Curiosity was designed and built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Curiosity is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG).

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission has four scientific goals:

1.Determine whether Mars could ever have supported life
              2. Study the climate of Mars
              3.Study the geology of Mars
              4. Plan for a human mission to Mars"

Apparently, according to the iOS app developer, he "owns the trademark for the word “ToDo”"

As if the patent trolls haven't given us enough headaches, now we have trademark trolls

Submission + - Flashback Trojan Hits 600,000 Macs and Counting (techweekeurope.co.uk)

twoheadedboy writes: "A Flashback variant dubbed Backdoor.Flashback.39 has infected over 600,000 Macs, according to Russian security firm Dr Web. The virulent Flashback trojan infecting Apple machines sparked interest earlier this week after it was seen exploiting a Java vulnerability, although it was actually first discovered back in September last year. The Trojan has a global reach after Dr Web found infected Macs in most countries. More than half of the Macs infected are in the US (56.6 percent), while another 19.8 percent are in Canada. The UK has 12.8 percent of infected Macs."

Submission + - Mac botnet grows to 600,000, 274 of them in Cupertino (extremetech.com) 1

MrSeb writes: "Russian security firm Dr Web warns that at least 600,000 Macs are infected and part of a growing botnet, further disputing the notion that Mac OS X is free of malware. 76% of these Macs are located in the US and Canada, with another 13% in the UK. Possibly more embarrassing for Apple is the fact that 274 infected computers are located in Cupertino, California, which may indicate Macs belonging to Apple employees or even on the company’s campus might be infected. The culprit is the Flashback Trojan virus, which uses a Java vulnerability to infect the target's Mac — and depressingly, Oracle actually fixed the bug back in February, but Apple has only now made the patch available through Software Update. Apple enthusiasts are usually quick to point out malware doesn’t do well on Mac because the operating system always asks for a password before software installation. With Flashback there is no such warning, which may signal a new front in Mac malware, where hackers are spending the time figuring out ways to get around Apple’s security protections. Before, when Mac market share was in the pits, this was a lot of work for little benefit. That changed with the uptick in popularity of Apple — now Macs are a much more attractive target."

Submission + - Next Great Depression? MIT researchers predict 'global economic collapse' by2030 (yahoo.com)

suraj.sun writes: A new study from researchers at Jay W. Forrester's institute at MIT says that the world could suffer from "global economic collapse" and "precipitous population decline" if people continue to consume the world's resources at the current pace(http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/next-great-depression-mit-researchers-predict-global-economic-190352944.html). The study's researchers created a computing model to forecast different scenarios based on the current models of population growth and global resource consumption, different levels of agricultural productivity, birth control and environmental protection efforts. Most of the computer scenarios found population and economic growth continuing at a steady rate until about 2030. But without "drastic measures for environmental protection," the scenarios predict the likelihood of a population and economic crash.
