Stony Stevenson writes: A group of researchers has described Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1 as a "performance dud". Researchers from the EXO Performance Network claimed that a series of in-house benchmark tests showed that users hoping to receive a speed boost from the update will be disappointed. "After extensive testing of Release To Manufacture and SP1-patched versions of Vista it seems clear that the hoped-for performance fixes that Microsoft has been hinting at have not materialised," the group said.

dermoth666 writes: Montreal is about to conclude a deal with Ile sans fil, Montreal's free WiFi non-lucrative organization. In a document obtained yesterday by La Presse, Montreal will be offering 200 000$ per year to Ile sans fil to install and maintain 400 access points in parks and public places. The proposal still has to go trough Montreal's executive committee, but if it pass it means Montreal will get totally free wireless access spread across the city. The article is in french only as it seems no english papers have covered this news yet.

Stony Stevenson writes: Researchers at Virginia Tech have released the first Green 500 list which ranks the world's supercomputers by performance-per-watt rather than pure processing power. The list of the 500 most energy efficient supercomputers around the world is a derivative of the Top 500 list, a bi-annual report of the top performing supercomputer sites. This inaugural list uses the measured power consumed during a Linpack run, if submitted, or peak power consumption of the supercomputer otherwise. The top of the list is completely dominated by IBM's Blue Gene supercomputers, with 26 of the top 27 deployments.
