I have been installing linux on the desktop for the last 12 years and some things are just as broken now as they were then.
For example:
I have never, and I mean never, in the last 12 years had the mic work after initial install of any distribution on a laptop. This wan't such a big deal 10 years ago but these days it is a deal breaker.
I should never have to edit my xorg.conf file in order to get my desktop working properly. The number of times I have updated a Linux OS and it broke what ever graphics driver I had installed and I am dumped at a command prompt on reboot. The graphical desktop needs to always work.
