"your time is inherently useless."
I volunteer with a group that delivers foodbank items to those who cannot leave their residence for age or health reasons. Time is their sole resource need.
Don't disregard what you clearly haven't been troubled enough to look for. There are countless groups which have no need for your money, but depend on your time.
If you are of a mind that $10 can feed a family of four, why not donate both the cash to provide it and time in a shelter's kitchen to prepare it? Because volunteering time is probably not your thing and you can give cash. That's cool. If time is all someone has to offer... that's cool, too.
When it comes to this sort of stuff, there is no wrong way to give.
You over-simplify.
See... You were raised to believe that the shoe is your best option for your feet. It may not be the same shoe which others accept as their best option, but those who wear shoes generally accept that the shoe is "it" for footwear. You have not devoted your life to arguing for alternatives to shoes; nor have you devoted significant energy toward inventing something more appropriate. In all probability, you are aware that there are other styles of shoes, but those which you've always worn tend to be what you stick with.
The same is true of religion... You accept that the shoe is what you need and is what is best for you because that is all you've ever known. In terms of indoctrination, acceptance of religion is strikingly similar...
The shoes you choose to wear. The divine comedy you accept as truth. The questions which never come to mind because the answer has been built into your social DNA by those who raised you...
You pay for the computer, the electricity, the networking gear, the internet connection. You pay with money.
You pay for the advertising. You pay by cooperating with 3rd party monetization of private information you would, never, otherwise assemble or disseminate of your own volition.
"every time you want to get on a freeway you have to stop and watch a 30 second ad first to pay for the road"
That's awful analogy number two... Unless you're prepared to develop a "tax-block" application, the advertising model doesn't fit as a comparison here.
The advertising models of the internet serve to prove that you CAN rape the willing. That's the only analogy which I see as being appropriate... and it's a right horrible analogy.
This is a really poor car analogy. What, precisely, about your computing experience is free?
Warning... my question is bait; with exceptionally rare exceptions, nothing about your computing experience is free (as in beer, or otherwise).
If you can access Google's cloud printing (you can) you're all set.
Free... so long as you don't mind sharing your data with Google (which you'd already be doing if you're using their cloud service).
I'm curious to see what better (faster!) ideas appear on this thread... There have to be better ways.
Or, at least, more interesting.
Now they're even down-modding my attempt to clarify that I'm not trolling.
I genuinely don't get it.
Hey mods... Why would you mod my non-trolling question a troll?
It's a light-hearted question which has resulted in a light-hearted thread of comments.
If I'd said something negative, I could see it, but... seriously; What gives?
Anyone else having a hard time taking something called "Ice Cream Sandwich" seriously?
Maybe that's where you're losing touch with what is actually happening...
"OWS protests was..."
1) They aren't protests. Ugly, random, and unwieldy as things may seem; It is a movement.
2) Past-tense is too soon; It's far from over.
3) Banana Phone is popular children's song written and performed by the artist Raffi (http://raffi.ytmnd.com/).
4) My Tin foil hat is smaller, paler, and less-often-used than your is.
5) tl;dr/tl;dw
I said earlier that, "If ANY of this were as simple and clear-cut as you suggest... we would not be having this exchange."
Well... Your most recent reply has me convinced and I stand corrected! You clearly know what works and what does not. The protests are without merit.
These global protestors are all feebs who should cower in your shadow some more. They are completely pathetic.
