Last year I left my role as sr. systems engineer at a corporation that was working me to death. I took a job nearby that was considerably less work/stress for slightly more pay. However, now that I'm a year into it, I'm scared of all the skills that are falling by the wayside from lack of use. I find myself setting up more environments at home simply for the experience. For me, it's less about learning new skills (or honing existing skills) for my current job, and more about making sure I'm up to speed for my *next* job.

Submission + - Experian sold social security numbers to ID Theft Service

realized writes: Experian — one of the three national US credit bureaus — reportedly sold SSNs through its subsidiary, Court Ventures, to the operators of SuperGet.info who then offered all of the information online for a price. The website would advertise having "99% to 100% of all USA" in their database on websites frequented by carders.

Hieu Minh Ngo, the website owner, has recently been charged with 15-count indictment filed under seal in November 2012, charging him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, substantive wire fraud, conspiracy to commit identity fraud, substantive identity fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit access device fraud, and substantive access device fraud.

Submission + - Solar Surpassed Only by Natural Gas For New Electrical Generating Capacity (solarbuildermag.com)

mdsolar writes: "According to the latest “Energy Infrastructure Update” report from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Office of Energy Projects, renewable energy sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, solar, water, wind) accounted for 30.03% of all new domestic electrical generating capacity installed in the first nine months of 2013 for a total of 3,218 MW.

That is more than that provided thus far this year by coal (1,543 MW – 14.40%), oil (27 MW – 0.25%), and nuclear power (0 MW – 0.00%) combined. However, natural gas dominated the first three-quarters of 2013 with 5,854 MW of new capacity (54.62%).

Among renewable energy sources, solar led the way for the first nine months of 2013 with 146 new “units” totaling 1,935 MW followed by wind with 9 units totaling 961 MW. Biomass added 57 new units totaling 192 MW while water had 11 new units with an installed capacity of 116 MW and geothermal steam had one new unit (14 MW).

The newly installed capacity being provided by the solar units is second only to that of natural gas. The new solar capacity in 2013 is 77.36% higher than that for the same period in 2012."

Yes, the teachers are lazy because "they don't want to tell the brats - whose asshole parents have raised asshole kids - to shut the hell up." Not to mention there's a pretty good chance the teachers didn't ask for the tablets -- these things are pretty rarely bottom-up endeavors. Oh, and, btw, my paper books when I was in school were decades old. Two years is bleeding-edge in the world of printed textbooks. You don't honestly think paper textbooks are updated annually, do you?

Hey, we have tons of great beer and awesome cheeseburgers. The other stuff is true, but we have some good burgers.

Plenty of deals can be struck should everyone decide to use it as a media box. In fact, it's probably more profitable that way than as an Android gaming device. Roku has been successful, and *all* their device does is stream media (ok, they did try to tack on gaming with the Angry Birds edition in the second generation, but I'd be stunned if anyone uses it for games).

Submission + - Robotic Kiosk Stores Digital Copies Of Physical Keys

An anonymous reader writes: The New York Daily News reports that a startup company in Manhattan is putting robotic key copying machines in 7-Eleven stores. The machines can automatically create physical copies of common apartment and office keys. What is more interesting is that they allow users to save digital copies of their keys, which can later be created when the original is lost or the user is locked out of their home.

Submission + - What is my software worth? 2

An anonymous reader writes: I'm an engineer with a full time job and I do a lot of "hobbying" on the side. I recently agreed to help a friend's mother with her business and develop an end-user software that she would sell to clients/franchiser to help them in tracking/maintaining their business. Here is the catch(if you will): I'm not getting paid for the development of the software. She can't afford to pay me for the time I spend developing software but I will be getting 100% of the sales from the software to the clients. My question is what would you sell a custom software application for? I'm not worried about getting rich off of this software, if anything it is more of a hobby that I'm going to get paid for. This particular application is for Windows.

Submission + - Will Fear of Spying Drive Us to the Dark Side of the Web? (ibtimes.co.uk)

DavidGilbert99 writes: Prism and the NSA spying scandal has made a lot of people jittery about what they do online. Who is watching them and what are they doing with the information they steal? In a paranoid world like this, many people could begin to consider the deep web as a way of anonymising their online activities, but as David Gilbert says in IBTimes UK, the dark internet is not a place for the faint-hearted
