Comment Re:a bit misleading (Score 1) 225

Being faster? That's just cheating. On reading the headline, I thought they had developed an algorithm that predicted your next move, which would have been much more impressive. You DO get a ~40% improved chance of winning with this strategy:

When your opponent loses, his next move will be to beat whatever your move was on that round.

This obviously relies on playing multiple rounds in a row against the same person. I never play RPS, but isn't the point to play it once to make a one off decision about something? If so, your strategy is useless.

I have never once seen an ounce of hostility toward legal immigrants in my life.

I have, many times. And i would be surprised if you actually haven't. A lot of it takes the form of racism. I've heard people told "go back to ________". There are numerous immigrant small business owners who suffer abuse solely because they are (or are perceived to be) not native americans. The stereotype is Korean store owners in non Korean communities, who are purportedly prime targets, especially when things start to go bad.

I love that your entire post is nothing more than a restatement of a fact presented in the 1st line of the summary... and it got modded +5 informative. Nothing against you, I just think some mods have a pretty low standard of what's informative. I wonder if my "You are currently reading slashdot." post will get modded informative.

Somehow I managed to get a virus on my computer. I'd take it to the professionals, but recently they've all inexplicably committed suicide. I'm deeply depressed and all my possessions are broken because I've been throwing them against the wall. It's only a matter of time before I start abusing those around me. Can anyone help me please???

Did Neandertals Paint Early Cave Art? 126

sciencehabit writes "Dating experts working in Spain, using a technique relatively new to archaeology, have pushed dates for the earliest cave art back some 4000 years to at least 41,000 years ago, raising the possibility that the artists were Neandertals rather than modern humans. And a few researchers say that the study argues for the slow development of artistic skill over tens of thousands of years — not a swift acquisition of talent, as some had argued."

uhh, you do realize that unmanned generally means that it doesn't havel ife support systems. We can get shit to the space station; we demonstrated that with the dragon capsule. However, we still don't have a way to get a man in space.

We could cryogenically freeze the astronauts and send them up as popsicles. Then, once we invent equipment to defreeze them, we can send that up and thaw them out. Problem solved. With enough creativity, nearly anything is possible.

You wanna be a minister too? I'll throw in a Ph. P (preacher of philosophy) for only $9.99 more. What a deal!!!

Hypothetical situation: You're a passenger in a car. Unbeknownst to you, the driver has a firearm in the glovebox. For some reason, he gets pulled over and the car gets searched. They find the firearm. Even though you deny it's yours, you both get cuffed and charged with concealing a weapon. With the concealed carry permit, your charges are dropped as soon as you show it to the arresting officer. Without it, you face a potential visit to the jail and a legal fight on your hands to get the charges dropped.

I don't know if i buy that.

Aren't you still on the hook for failing to inform the officer you were carrying? And if you do things your way, doesn't getting released require admitting that you were carrying the gun and opening yourself up to explaining any shadiness related to said gun.

The simple fact is, holding a CCP gives you more rights than someone without one. Assuming everyone with a CCP is carrying, or even wants to carry a weapon, is a foolish view.

Interesting. I had never considered someone would get a concealed carry permit without intent to carry.

Comment does this affect offspring? (Score 1) 62

I haven't read the actual original paper because i'm guessing I don't have the appropriate background to understand it. But based on the summary, I'm curious... If there are changes with age, would these differences be passed on to offspring? I assume that some of these aging effects are similar from person to person, so if they are passed on, I imagine that would mean there are statistically significant differences in certain traits based on the age of the parents?

Is anyone more knowledgeable in the field able to comment?
