Journal Journal: [Beloved] It Is Not a Word 2

It is not a word spoken,
Few words are said;
Nor even a look of the eyes
Nor a bend of the head,

But only a hush of the heart
That has too much to keep,
Only memories waking
That sleep so light a sleep.

I would imagine that the reason price hasn't been announced yet is because they don't know just how much they will ultimately be able to make them for themselves, and the giveaway they are doing is to gauge demand so they can figure out how much they have to charge.

If that's the case, the more ideas that got submitted to them, the better it will be.

Of course, it also might mean that giving them a preview into what kind of demand to expect, they might know for sure just how much they will able to fleece future customers. So hey... what do I know?

The Russians could not have known what Obama would or wouldn't eventually do.

You mean, you don't think Obama tipped his hand like this?

http://www.reuters.com/article...

"President Barack Obama was caught on camera on Monday assuring outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he will have "more flexibility" to deal with contentious issues like missile defense after the U.S. presidential election.

Obama, during talks in Seoul, urged Moscow to give him "space" until after the November ballot, and Medvedev said he would relay the message to incoming Russian president Vladimir Putin."

Bush was seen on the international stage as crazy. Obama is seen as weak. As Obama's weakness has unfolded over the past 6 years, it's obvious we would've been better off with Sad Grandpa McCain than "we don't have a strategy yet" Obama :)

I have to admit to some excitement about the recently mentioned MIPS32 board as well, but to be fair, I don't think anybody is actually sure how much of a rival the MIPS32 microcontroller board is liable to be, since its price point has not been announced. If it costs 50 times as much, for instance, then it's not really in going to rival the Pi because it's targeting a different market entirely.

He hasn't quite blamed Ukraine on him yet, but give him time :)

As for whether or not the situation would be better, you mentioned Chechnya and Georgia, of which the Chechnyan wars started under Clinton, and Georgia was undermined by Obama's *removal* of sanctions in 2010 despite continued military occupation.

The simple fact of the matter is that the world *was* better with Bush in charge. Obama, not so much :)

This is all way off-topic by now, but my point is still the same: MojoKid's position is probably correct. There are significant costs for servers and for bandwidth for any site that scales up, and they can easily become more than it's reasonable to expect a hobbyist to pay out of their own pocket if the site becomes popular.

Of course, this is all before there is any actual content on the site! Doing the planning and research and writing and editing and presentation of original material takes about as much time and money on a web site as in any other medium.

You know somewhere that provides reliable hosting for five servers supplying 40MB/s each for less than 5-10 bucks? I doubt that very much. For the dedicated servers I use on one of the commercial sites I mentioned, I'd be running at over $1,000 per day for that kind of traffic.

Obviously no-one running at that kind of scale is still on the same kind of hardware and pricing set up that my little site is on, but dedicated/unmetered lines aren't cheap either. In any case, you get the point: the servers aren't the problem for high traffic sites, the network bandwidth is.
