Unfortunately I have had a bitch of a time getting LibreOffice to reliably work with my old-ish MS Word docs, which aren't even that old (think like 5 years.) Random characters, breaks, etc. Anecdotal, but then so is your experience.

I'd like to sell you my renewable energy source - a spring. In fact, it is more easily renewable than many other renewable energies. All you do is recoil the spring again.

Noise cancelling headphones are highly frequency-dependent, and typically attenuate only 20 dB or so. Earplugs can attenuate 30 dB, and aren't as frequency-dependent. And they are dirt cheap. The only downside is that they don't play music.

Maybe retail stuff could be packaged in a simple cardboard box with biodegradable stuffing, instead of those stupid, stupid plastic clamshell containers that frustrate and then cut me when I try to get them open.

Do you mean legally? Or from a user perspective? The answer to the former is they can't, and the answer to the latter is because nobody else provides the functionality they do.

As I understand it, the difference between a cartridge and something like a USB drive is one of level of integration. In the case of a cartrige, the logic in the cartridge is basically directly interfaced with the system hardware, and becomes part of the execution path directly. With a USB drive, there are layers of obfuscation separating the data on the drive from the computer (USB drivers, the filesystem, the OS, etc.) It's probably a subjective line to draw, but in the case of cartridges vs. USB drives it's pretty clear.
