In between disasters, you use the 'surplus' diesel it to fire up the generator periodically, and also do cutover tests to make sure the thing will actually work. If not, get it serviced immediately. Anything is better than finding out in a disaster that the generator doesn't work. If the diesel goes bad, you eat the cost and move on.
