So what'd be "encrypted email" for? Horny partners? Surprise birthday parties?
I am really curious what they think about it.

Me english to be bad. Sory!
If I establish an internet activity to provide encrypted email service I am supposed I know what encryption is for and that I won't be bale to snoop into it.
If later I say "I shut down the service not to help terrorists, as my service was meant only for horny partners and surprise birthday parties, not to really get un-snoopable communication", then I show everyone I am an incompetent and a simpleton.

In order to be a Google competitor you have to differentiate away from it.
In my opinion TouchWiz and a few Samsung online services atop of Andoid are not enough.
Google controls the Android ecosystem.
Making real hardware also it is not, partly because Google is expected to deliver some in the near future.
Different/better hardware and different OS (like FirefoxOS) with different GUI could help. Let's see what happens.

In order to get Linux growing is a similar thing.
A "ring0" with a very basic system on top of which all other distros are based.
This would avoid everyone re-inventing the warm water multiple times, while distros would focus on the other rings.
More or less the same as is seen in FreeBSD with the "GIU"derivatives.
A controlled ring0 would focus on keeping the system up and running at the very best with a centralized repo for everyone.
But you may say i am a dreamer ...
