My guess would be either Corning or Bausch and Lomb or a combination of both are housing these scopes. Corning has a long history of doing work on large projects of national importance in relation to telescope mirrors and Bausch and Lomb of course has a pretty solid reputation in the field of optics.

Comment We the People (Score 1) 1799

The country is in transition as the world is in transition. As the American middle class and poor start to wake up and look around they are starting to see that American exceptionalism has become irrelevant in todays global market. Do, we the people, have any relevance today? We will see if this movement grows to the point that forces current American policy to be rethought. Right now people feel very detached from the political process. The frustration people feel is the visual equivalent of an ant trying to pull a elephant. It just does not seem that the current behavior of government, as a whole, is a reflection of we the people no matter how we vote.

Since each space point is moving away from each other this is unlikely to happen. Given the current mass of the black hole plus all matter within the space-time sphere that our galaxy would be found in after "digestion" one could calculate if that would be greater than the expansion of space time. I put my money on expansion.

4chan Declares War On Snow 201

With all the recent hacktivism in the news, Anonymous has decided to take on a new and powerful enemy: snow. On Sunday the group announced that it will "do everything in its power to shut snow down by attacking the Weather Channel and North Face websites, boycotting outerwear, and voting for the sun as Time’s 2010 Person Of The Year." I'm sure there are a lot of people in Minneapolis right now that would wish them luck.

From the article: "Mr Churchill is reported to have made a declaration to the effect of the following: 'This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic among the general population and destroy one's belief in the Church.'"

Minnesota Introduces World's First Carbon Tariff 303

hollywoodb writes "The first carbon tax to reduce the greenhouse gases from imports comes not between two nations, but between two states. Minnesota has passed a measure to stop carbon at its border with North Dakota. To encourage the switch to clean, renewable energy, Minnesota plans to add a carbon fee of between $4 and $34 per ton of carbon dioxide emissions to the cost of coal-fired electricity, to begin in 2012 ... Minnesota has been generally pushing for cleaner power within its borders, but the utility companies that operate in MN have, over the past decades, sited a lot of coal power plants on the relatively cheap and open land of North Dakota, which is preparing a legal battle against Minnesota over the tariff."
