Open Access To Exercise Data? 188

identity0 writes "A recent Slashdot discussion about heart-rate monitors in schools got me thinking about getting one for my own exercise. It turns out that the available models have a wide range of features: calorie rate, pedometers, GPS, PC connectivity, etc. Being a geek, I want one that will let me look at my exercise data, and I'm curious what experiences Slashdotters have had with them. Some download data to a proprietary application — are open source alternatives available or is the data format easily readable? Others upload data to an online app — can the data be pulled off the site or is it forever trapped on their servers? While I'm not an open source zealot or a paranoid about my data being shared, I would like to know that I can access my data in the future. Whatever method you guys use to monitor your exercise, I'd love to hear about it."

Finland's party is the eight Pirate Party to be registered on the planet and intends to participate in local elections in October."

reeeh2000 writes "According to TorrentFreak, with half of polling stations now closed in Sweden, the Pirate Party has at least one guaranteed seat in the EU Parliament. Currently, the party is sitting with 7% of the vote. Depending on how the remaining districts voted, the Pirate Party could win another seat, for a total of two." Reader lordholm adds a link to an article about exit polls in Sweden (link in Swedish) indicating that the Pirate Party will score two seats, writing "According to the polls, the pirate party is the largest party in the 18-30 year age category of voters. The final counting of votes (including around a million postal votes) will not be done until later next week."

Many Analog TV Watchers Aren't Aware of Upcoming Switchover 440

A recent poll of TV watchers shows that many Americans aren't aware the end times are coming for analog broadcast signals. "The survey found that the group most affected by the analog cutoff -- those with no cable or satellite service -- are most in the dark about what will happen to their sets: Only one-third of them had heard that their TVs are set to stop receiving programs. Of course, there are solutions. Congress is subsidizing the purchase of digital television receivers. And the cable TV industry is hoping that this will spur the last holdouts to buy pay TV."

Submission + - The most amazing Chuck Norris fact ever! (ninemsn.com.au)

MrNaz writes: "Chuck Norris facts have been circulating the Interwebs for some time now. Given that the only ones that really get around are those that are the most extreme and outrageous, it would seem obvious that they are a gag. However, Le Chuck has now decided that it is necessary to sue somebody to ensure that people aren't falsely duped into thinking that his tears cure cancer or that his sidekick is not capable of altering the Earth's orbit. Chuck Norris Fact 37,342: Chuck Norris is so awe-inspiring that he has to sue to make sure people don't think these facts are true!"
