Comment Re:Symptom of a much bigger problem (Score 1) 230

Not much. What changed in the 2000s was NT becoming more multi-threaded & multi-processed, enabling performance scaling from multi-core architectures from both Intel & AMD. That's what made it easier for newer & faster CPUs: in the 90s, Wintel PCs couldn't improve their performance by tossing more CPUs @ the box, whereas today, they can. Not so much an issue w/ Unixstations

Comment Re:Fsck x86 (Score 1) 230

Had Intel's Itanium plan worked, Intel would have been happy to let x86 die. Problem was that AMD would have none of it, and extended x86 CISC to 64-bit. So if you are pissed @ x86 not being dead already, look @ AMD, who'd have had the option of Alpha CPUs had they been open to RISC. Had AMD gone w/ Alphas & Intel w/ Itanium, AMD would likely have won that one

Yeah, I'm seeing the same thing - and am not posting as AC. But regardless of whether I check the No ads box or not, I keep seeing the Ads. What's more - I don't have Flash installed on my laptop under either IE or FF (and do not have Chrome) and yet, I'm seeing not just ads, but animated ads.

Has /. decided to disable the ad disabling mechanism for those who don't switch to beta?

Comment Re:Never use the wifi at an airport (Score 2) 135

Recently, @ ORD in transit, I needed to use WiFi w/ my iPod to use my email to inform colleagues where I was. Google interpreted it as someone trying to break into my account, and forced me to change a password I've had for 10 years. Yahoo! too couldn't be accessed, since the WiFi there was open. They had a touchscreen somewhere, but that had a resistive screen, making it impossible to do any typing for long.
