Submission + - First Successful Demonstration of CO2 Capture

Anonymous Coward writes: "Global Research Technologies, LLC (GRT), a technology research and development company, and Klaus Lackner from Columbia University have achieved the successful demonstration of a bold new technology to capture carbon from the air. The "air extraction" prototype has successfully demonstrated that indeed carbon dioxide (CO2) can be captured from the atmosphere. This is GRT's first step toward a commercially viable air capture device."

Submission + - MySQL + AmazonS3??

Venotar writes: While perusing the MySQL conference website, I noticed that Mark Atwood will be discussing a plugin storage engine for Amazon's S3 with MySQL. Further googling only turned up Pete Freitag's interesting observation that combining such a plug-in with Amazon's EC2 could be very useful. Does anyone know where a copy of this plug-in could be found, or if it's just vaporware? It seems like the sort of tool that could shift the economics behind quite a few ways businesses use their technology, so I was curious to hear what sort of ideas the slashdot crowd would come up with.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components. A list of new features can be found here.

Google's Silent Monopoly 425

An anonymous reader writes "Isaac Garcia from Central Desktop Blog writes, 'How much does Google pay *itself* to claim the top ad position for searches relevant to its own products? Google holds the top advertisement (Adword) slot for the following key words: intranet, spreadsheet, documents, calendar, word processor, email, video, instant messenger, blog, photo sharing, online groups, maps, start page, restaurants, dining, and books... ...if you are trying to advertise a product that is competitive to Google, then you'll never be able to receive the Top Ad Position, no matter how much money you bid and spend. How different is it than MSFT placing its products (Internet Explorer) in a premium marketing position (embedded in the OS)?'"

Submission + - Automatically Convert .docx Files to .txt

aloser writes: "When Microsoft released Office 2007, they replaced the new Microsoft Word default format with the Microsoft Open Office XML Format (.docx). Unfortunately, this format is far from open and far from accessible. Mac and Linux users have (at least for the moment) been shut out. I whipped up a quick script that will extract the text (albeit minus the formatting) from a .docx file for viewing on any Operating System; no software needed. Enjoy!"

Submission + - Viability of a National Meth Makers Registry

Jefferey King writes: According to an MSNBC article published earlier today, many States are considering the creation of another type of Online Offenders Registry — one for anyone involved in the "cooking" or dealing of methamphetamine. Online Offenders Registries in the United States were previously restricted to sex offenders, namely, rapists and pedophiles. The question is, "What's the point, and why just meth?"

Submission + - Time for the Adult Industry to come out the slum?

Kenneth writes: "Considering an estimated $1billion turnover in the US alone,is it time for the Adult Entertainment Industry to come out of the dark corners of the web? Its must be time to finally look at the iTunes business model and wake up the industry. Can this be a good thing, considering that it isnt actually illegal? Would it help clean out the underground similiar to MP3 downloads and iTunes?"

Submission + - HP Tosses Hat Into Gaming Ring

PreacherTom writes: Though we may expect it of late from such companies as Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, it isn't only the usual suspects who are tossing their hats into the gaming ring. Enter Hewlett-Packard, who hopes to leverage the newfound graphics muscle they gained during the Voodoo PC acquisition into new directions. Preliminary experiments have testers in England freeing Anne Boleyn from the Tower of London on their iPAQ's. "Sitting in front of a TV is boring," says HP VP Philip McKinney. "Gaming is the new high-definition experience. Voodoo offers HP what an F1 racing team does for a carmaker."
