Seconded. Married to a teacher who is now running daycare for some friends' kids so she can stay home with ours. I'm a tech for local catholic schools whose teachers and staff can't deal with Linux though I myself have been a user for more than a decade.

We have acquired some older P4 machines and I have one slightly newer one that I set up as an Edubuntu LTSP server. The older ones NetBoot from it.

Point is, my 3-yr-old and her friends between 3 and 4 love Gcompris, and my wife thinks it's incredible. Connect-the-dots, memory, typing blaster and even a simple mouse-learning game where one wipes translucent bricks away to reveal a fun animal picture. It gets used for maybe an hour total per day, so it's a fun reward for good behavior and a pastime while the babies need feeding or lunch prepared or laundry done, not a mindless zombie creator. Compare the activities with what's playing on the Disney or nick channels and you can easily see which is better for a developing mind. Most activities are nearly if not entirely on par with the sensory and craft activities my wife plans with the kids, though visits to the rec center are a nice break from monotony, and they also attend a nursery school 2 days a week. Nice days are also used well with play on the swings and trampoline. I'm just saying by way of comparison for the benefit of those commenters who will say, "why stick your kid in front of a screen?" As though life is binary.

Google's Rules of Acquisition 115

waderoush writes "For many startup entrepreneurs, getting acquired by Google is the dream exit. But these days Google is getting a lot more discriminating about what kinds of companies it buys — and a lot more careful about how it integrates newly acquired teams. This article offers an in-depth look at how Google achieves a two-thirds success rate with acquisitions, and why things still occasionally go south. 'The return on our acquisition dollars has been extraordinary,' says vice president of business development David Lawee, Google's M&A czar. But Google insiders say it still takes a lot of work to make sure acquired startups go the way of Android (the mobile operating system, acquired in 2005) and not Aardvark (the social search site, acquired in 2010 and shut down in 2011)."

Microsoft Behind Google Complaints To EC 346

justice4all writes to share that some of the recent complaints to the European Commission about Google have apparently been coming from Microsoft. "A lawyer for Microsoft confirmed that the software giant told the US Department of Justice and the European Commission how Google’s business practices may be harming publishers, advertisers and competition in search and online advertising. [...] 'Google’s algorithms learn less common search terms better than others because many more people are conducting searches on these terms on Google. These and other network effects make it hard for competing search engines to catch up. Microsoft’s well-received Bing search engine is addressing this challenge by offering innovations in areas that are less dependent on volume. But Bing needs to gain volume too, in order to increase the relevance of search results for less common search terms.'"

I find myself surprisingly on the side of the convictors in this case. I don't care if every stupid video of some cretin doing something nasty gets posted publicly; free speech is a great thing, but it should not be Google's position to blindly defend it. Providing a place for this kind of media results in a gray area for the behavior depicted.

Copyright belongs to the person behind the camera, admittedly. However, responsibility for showing to the world mistreatment of living beings does fall to Google for *not* screening it privately first.

There can be other places to post videos of cruel behavior; Google does not to staunchly defend people's rights here, and unless they mean to, they should admit responsibility and discontinue allowing inappropriate media to be posted. If they don't want to provide the resources for financial or other reason, fine. Stop allowing posting altogether and get out of the video-hosting business. If they want to provide a place for people to show their true selves, however, they should be prepared to defend them or accept punishment on their behalf.

With New SDK, VoIP Over 3G Apps Now Working On iPhone 171

silverpig writes "Yesterday marked the announcement of the Apple iPad device, and with it came a new version of the SDK. In this new version, Apple has lifted the VoIP over 3G restrictions that limited VoIP traffic to wifi only. This morning, Fring announced that its iPhone app is 3G-capable starting immediately. No update is needed as apparently the app had 3G capability all along, but a server-side block prevented its use. Furthermore, apparently a 3G-capable version of Skype has been ready for some time now, and has been waiting for this restriction to be lifted."

Samsung does have a line of netbooks (mostly same spec as everyone else, but oooh! colors!) and presumably regular laptops, but I can't believe no one's pointed out on this thread that enlightenment is meant for mobile devices, and since Samsung currently has a meagre Android lineup, apparently replacing their Instinct line with the Moment, this sponsorship could finally lead them to market dominance in one area, when they have spread themselves thin trying to be an everything company. This is their one foothold on making a unique and great interactive experience.

Being an Android and Enlightenment fan (and current Instinct S30 owner), I will be following this closely -- and trying OpenGEU, since someone mentioned it earlier.
