As i said in the post above yours, VLC has it's volume controls mapped to the scroll wheel, so you may accidentally push volume above 100% without realizing it. Especially if you use the touchpad. Stupid design decision (allow user to push volume above 100% by default) compounded by silliness (volume control mapped to the scroll wheel). But the VLC dudes have an arrogance measured in metric tonnes, so they 'll probably defend the scroll wheel thing, as they 've done in the past.
