Submission + - Your Neighbor's WiFi Wants You to Vote for Romney

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "Megan Garber writes that wireless routers have become the lawn signs of the digital age particularly in large apartment buildings, where almost every unit has a unique wifi network that will be detected in turn by all the other unique wifi networks, SSIDs can be a cheeky, geeky way to broadcast messages to your immediate neighbors. Most of us keep it simple with "275_Elm_Street," "Apt23," or "my_network" but some get more creative with names like: "Apt112IHaveYourMail," "PrettyFlyForAWiFi," or "WeCanHearYouHavingSex" — a great way to freak out your annoying neighbors without hiding in their bushes or peeping in their windows late at night. Now the team at OpenSignalMaps, which maintains a database of geolocated wifi access points, analyzed the data they've collected about wireless routers to see whether wifi names are "being used to fly political colors" and have found, globally, 1,140 results for "Obama" and an additional six for "Romney" — an indication not necessarily of Romney's popularity relative to the president's, but of the attention that four years as president can confer. "There's something uniquely contemporary and incredibly old-school about that kind of broadcasting: It's messaging meant only for your immediate neighbors," writes Garber "It's both intimate and isolating, both invasive and impersonal, both omnipresent and invisible, both passive and aggressive." Which makes them a good metaphor for political discourse as it looks in the US today with its particular mix of intimacy and impersonality. "The politicized network names are like lawn signs for people who don't have lawns.""

Submission + - SETI reasearch with Very Large Baseline Interferometry (bbc.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: Radio astronomers in Australia have tried a to detect a transmission from Gliese 581 using Very Large Baseline Interferometry with the Australian Large Baseline Array http://arxiv.org/abs/1205.6466. The star Gliese 581 (Gl581) is 20 light years away and is orbited by at least two planets in habitable zone. While the astronomers haven't detected any signal from Gl581, they have derived a limit on the strength of the signal that could be detected from Earth. In simple terms, if a transmitter like Arecibo would have been in operation in the Gl581 system and beaming in our direction, the signal would have been picked.
This is a breakthrough method to examine extraterrestrial transmissions and will be implemented with the Square Kilometre Array, the gigantic radio interferometer that will be built in South Africa and Australia. With this technique, the SKA will lift the SETI exploration to an amazing new regime.

Submission + - Toddler's iPad Tantrum Gets Him Kicked Off Plane 3

theodp writes: A three-year-old boy on an Alaska Airlines flight to St. Martin Island from Seattle threw such severe conniptions after his iPad was taken away before takeoff that he and his family were removed from the plane. Alaska Airlines said this was a judgment call on the captain's part — the boy reportedly wouldn't sit upright and wouldn't keep his seatbelt on. No word if the little tyke tweeted his disgust with how the airline deprived him of his iPad rights, a la Alec Baldwin.

Submission + - White House responds to ACTA petition (whitehouse.gov)

hguorbray writes: Predictably tepid response from the Whitehouse saying that they want to hear from all stakeholders -unfortunately 'he who has the gold makes the rules' will continue to prevail and it will probably take more than the 50k petition signers to make the people's voices be heard

It's obviously not perfect but it can be helpful to have SOMETHING between the kids and the pr0n. Policing your kids isn't bulletproof either, you simply can't do it all the time without chaining them in the basement. I don't see how a somewhat helpful optional filter is problematic given that it seems pretty easy to implement and there's probably people willing to donate to it if they went that route. If you had kids you would probably see the difference between "young kids seeing sex" and "young kids seeing mutilation, simulated rape," etc. etc.

Show me ONE link ONE photo of any of those things in Wikipedia. Just one. So far, I've seen an 18th century artistic representation of missionary style sex. That's called art. Yeah, I have a problem with your precious "filtering" software, when no problem exists. Also, please explain the difference between "filtering" and censorship. It's the same thing.

Good or bad. If people are spamming the site with it, it is still a nuisance.

A nuisance for whom? I'm on wiki several times per day and have never run across it. I wasn't on Wikipedia searching for interracial gang bang with double penetration. I guess if the kids decide to search for "massive black cock". they might find it. Well, let me see. I'll do a wiki search for that and see what comes up. OK here's the result. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahma_(chicken) What a scandal.

Um, what? A lot of porn involves violence, in case you didn't know.

"A lot". Got statistics on that? What part is violent? The multiple interracial gang bangs, or hard nipple tweaking? Is that violence? Is a huge cock stuffed into a small Asian woman too violent? Should legislate a ban on double anal? After all, it looks terribly uncomfortable...violent even. I guess we'd also have to define what "violent" in porn actually is. Is it all just violent because it's not on the wedding night and missionary position? Maybe we should ban sex outside marriage. This should definitely be legislated and there should be a massive witch hunt on Wiki, too.

Comment Look, this is stupid (Score 1) 544

If your kids look for porn, they're going to find it. Who cares if it's on Wikipedia especially? If it is, it's likely for informational purposes. I don't think Wikipedia was designed to be a porn site. If your kids want to look at porn, I suggest parental software and supervision. Take some responsibility for your kids. Reminds me of Kyle's mom on South Park going after Terrance and Philip. Anyway, who cares if your kids see sex? They're going to see it anyway. You might as well banalize it now. Try to be a little more French and a little less Tea Bagger; your kids will be the better for it.

Submission + - AT&T Expects Data-Only Phone Plans Within 2 Years (google.com)

An anonymous reader writes: AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said today that he expects wireless carriers to start offering data-only cellphone plans within the next 24 months. "Analysts see such plans as a logical extension of trends in wireless technology. Smartphones with data service can already use it for Internet phone calls and texting through services such as Skype.
Phone calls are also taking a back seat to other things people do with their smartphones. AT&T has been recording a decline in the average number of minutes used per month.' He says there isn't a specific plan in the works; he just think it's inevitable.

Submission + - Redesigned cooler reinvents tuberculosis treatment (patexia.com)

sarfralogy writes: "It started with a basic soft drink cooler, a need for easier management of tuberculosis and $150,000 in innovation support.
A big challenge in managing tuberculosis is keeping the medicine cool, in addition to tracking and monitoring dose administration. These challenges can be life-threatening, especially in less-developed countries, where refrigerators and fancy cooling devices are rare; ice must be trucked in on a daily basis to keep medicines at controlled temperatures. A redesigned cooler with the ability to keep the medicine cool and record when medicine is dispensed is aiming to solve both these problems.
The design of the cooler is simple and practical — common characteristics of a scientifically sound experiment or innovation. It’s nothing more than a standard soft drink cooler but the team from MIT's Little Devices Lab equipped the cooler with the ability to sound an alert when the temperature inside the cooler becomes too high and transmit data wirelessly using a cellphone transmitter whenever the cooler is opened."
