Submission + - CDC: Average American Woman Now Weighs As Much As 1960s US Man (cbslocal.com)

schwit1 writes: The average American woman now weighs as much as the average American man weighed in 1960.

Both U.S. men and women have been packing on the pounds since 1960, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that the average American woman now weighs 166.2 pounds — nearly identical to what American men weighed in the 1960s. And U.S. men have expanded greatly in the same time period, having gained nearly 30 pounds from the 1960s to 2010 — 166.3 pounds to 195.5 pounds today.

The CDC data shows that both sexes have gained almost an inch in height from the 1960s, which factors into some of the overall weight gain. But women have seen an 18.5 percent increase in weight gain from 1960 and men have shown a 17.6 percent increase in overall weight gain.

Then the examples given didn't or wouldn't need malware to obtain access to a system.

While this is unclear what they are saying is they can't point to a person specifically, it being outside their expertise.

Submission + - US hacking: Military and intelligence data 'accessed' (bbc.com) 1

middleclassjobs writes: Details of a major hack emerged last week, but officials have now given details of a potential second breach. Hackers with suspected links to China appear to have accessed sensitive data on US intelligence and military personnel, American officials say. Officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press (AP) news agency, believe the attackers have targeted the forms submitted by intelligence and military personnel for security clearances.
The document includes personal information — everything from eye color, to financial history, to past substance abuse, as well as contact details for the individual's friends and relatives.

What ISP still provides USENET access?

Charter.com :) ya, I was fairly surprised myself. nntp.charter.net

I'm sure there are just a handful of us using it as it's becoming the great unknown; also why years ago they gave a date which has long since past that the Usenet would be shutdown yet still accessible.

Thought I'd check, I don't have numbers just the size of the file and the speed a bar goes from 0 to 100 for it's download (Forte Agent) and it does seem to be faster, but that could be due to a number of reasons. The important thing though is it's still accessible.

Submission + - Uber puts passengers at risk with a flawed driver-approval process (betanews.com)

Mark Wilson writes: Uber, the San Francisco-based private taxi firm, is putting its passengers in grave danger. The company uses a computerized driver sign-up system that can be easily fooled into authorizing drives with fake insurance papers. The transport network exploded onto the scene a few years ago, and a whistleblower claims that it is all too easy to cheat the system making it possible for virtually anyone to sign up to be an Uber driver.

The vulnerability was found to have been exploited in London where there are around 15,000 Uber drivers in operation. The scam has been demonstrated by The Guardian who worked with a whistleblower to fraudulently sign up as a driver. It was achieved using fabricated insurance papers from a made up company with a fake letterhead.

Submission + - Commodore PC still controls heat and A/C at 19 Michigan Public Schools (woodtv.com) 2

jmulvey writes: Think your SCADA systems are outdated? Environmental monitoring at 19 Grand Rapids Public Schools are still controlled by a Commodore Amiga. Programmed by a High School student in the 1980s, the system has been running 24/7 for decades. A replacement has been budgeted by the school system, estimated cost: Between $1.5 and 2 million. How much is your old Commodore Amiga worth?

I wasn't happy about this myself when the ISPs started doing it, but my guess is that it'd be a problem if they were throttling or blocking your access to Usenet with any other provider, but not the one they're bundling with your service.

Shoot the headers don't even show what server sent it anymore "Path: not-for-mail" is as good as it gets.

My Usenet comes from my provider as a free service, but they do pull from another service with a retention of 5-10 years for the text groups, southwind.net seems a familiar name to of shown up in the headers.

Since it can't be throttled anymore I'll most likely lose it, my ISP did post a few years ago it was being dropped, yet it's still available.

Wonder if they can continue to block outbound SMTP though. Ironically, my ISP locking me to their SMTP as a spam prevention tactic means I can't reach people from time to time because Spamcop has been RBLing my ISP's SMTP.

A problem I've never had, I POP3 in, and SMTP out, and my ISP only has email accounts I use on mobile devices (expendable).

Subject to reasonable network management - Not that that will ever be an abused argument.
