Comment Re:PotPlayer VS. VLC - which is better and why? (Score 1) 85

VLC as I've never run across PotPlayer, but seeing as it only plays on Windows XP and above, only of interest to a few here, VLC has always been a cross-platform utility.

I've used VLC on my Androind S5 cell phone from day one to play videos in bed (to put me to sleep). Very nice, finger slide the right side of the screen for volume, only option I really use.

Thanks APK but I'll give it a version or two, I didn't think it would take long for a newer version as everybody was having problems with it, or more to the point IcarosPropertyHandler.dll

VLC does most if not all I need. The only exception is a .SWF file (requires Flash).

Has it finally implemented some of the standard functionality everyone expects from a video player? Can I finally just click the screen to pause/unpause? Does ALT-ENTER finally work to fullscreen? These don't sound all that important, but they're both constant minor irritants every time I end up using VLC for something.

by Anonymous Coward: "Well, VideoLAN is not a company: it's a not profit organization, driven by volonteers to work on free software."

As such it's documentation (help file) or menus aren't updated accordingly. VLC will do just about anything, but you might have to search for many of these features.

I use PMS to stream from my PC to PS3 using VLC, this was all done using outside documentation. Ripping DVD/CD's? best done searching for a VLC how to.

It apparently started as a music player this from a set of key-combs not commonly known of. I found searching for just that; key-combos to use with Power Pro (AutoIt - AutoHotKeys type program) to control VLC from a Menu of commands I find useful.

I've already installed the new VLC but haven't had a need to use it yet, but noticed F11 as being full screen mode (toggle), and works fine with nothing playing.

Submission + - Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov shot dead in Moscow.

An anonymous reader writes: BBC News Reports

An unidentified attacker shot Mr Nemtsov four times in central Moscow, a source in the law enforcement bodies told Russia's Interfax news agency. He was shot near the Kremlin while walking with a woman, according to Russian-language news website Meduza. "Several people" had got out of a car and shot him, it added. Mr Nemtsov, 55, served as first deputy prime minister under the late President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s.

Meanwhile, various sources report a massive gathering of protestors at the site of the shooting.

Ever been to Alaska?

Walk out of a bar at 4am and it's as bright as noon is very freaky, and your ready to start the day over.

Noon during the Winter is dark as midnight. Cabin fever is very real in Alaska when one lives far from anyone else (very common), the reason pot was legalized, it gave an alternative to drinking, as alcohol was being abused for relief.

I take back my other comments, another day another view, as of today I have to use Opera 12 to view /. .

I can't post only reply, yes it's a mess, Firefox and Opera can't even find the login the search covers who knows what. Login could be a problem as only half shows up, so can't read what goes where ie: logging in, or signing up.

It's unusable for me unless I go to Opera 12, even then posting isn't an option.

I'm reminded of the BF4 release, doesn't anybody test these things before being released?

Opera 12 and 27, FireFox not 36 - no problem with any, FireFox did seem like it was running into problems then showed it.

Submission + - Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook Press WA for $40M for New UW CS Building

theodp writes: "Nice computer industry you got there. Hate to see something bad happen to it." That's the gist of a letter sent by Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Code.org, and other tech giants earlier this week asking the WA State Legislature to approve $40M in capital spending to help fund a new $110M University of Washington computer science building ($70M will be raised privately). "As representatives of companies and businesses that rely on a ready supply of high quality computer science graduates," wrote the letter's 23 signatories, "we believe it is critical for the State to invest in this sector in a way that ensures its vibrancy and growth. Our vision is for Washington to continue to lead the way in technology and computer science, but we must keep pace with the vast demand." The UW Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering profusely thanked tech leaders for pressing for a new building, which UW explained "will accommodate a doubling of our enrollment." Coincidentally, the corporate full-press came not long after the ACM Education Council Diversity Taskforce laid out plans "to get companies to press universities to use more resources to create more seats in CS classes" to address what it called "the desperate gap between the rising demand for CS education and the too-few seats available." Interestingly, had Microsoft, Amazon, and Code.org execs not quashed a proposed WA State income tax in 2010, the tax on Steve Ballmer's planned $2B Microsoft stock sale alone might have raised $180 million. Hey, better that Ballmer's tax savings further enrich Donald Sterling, right?

Submission + - Union: Tech shuttle drivers should earn as much as the tech workers themselves.

An anonymous reader writes: As more and more bus drivers vote to unionize, some want to take it a few steps further. David Huerta, president of one of the unions, describes his wishes as follows, in the San Jose Mercury News:

Now is the opportunity for shuttle bus drivers, for food service workers, for janitors, for security officers to re-ask the question: Should I be equally as valued as the high tech workers in the high tech industry?

He did not state a specific opinion as to require a Bachelor's degree in Urban Transport, or equivalent experience, for future bus drivers.
