I'm sorry to answer my own post, but I just wanted to add: if industry support is the thing tilting you one way or the other, maybe you should consider that jquery recently got embraced in different ways by both Microsoft and Nokia.

So depending on your on your needs, it could go either way. Featurewise, I think that both are pretty solid.

Submission + - Microsoft announces Multi-Touch coffee table

An anonymous reader writes: MacScoop reports: "Microsoft announced its first device which uses the Multi-Touch technology also present in the iPhone. It's not a digital media player, it's not a mobile phone, it's neither a TabletPC, it's a coffee table!" An impressive video on PopularMechanics.com demos the technology.

Submission + - Open or Low Cost Map Data

Zugla writes: "With google and yahoo's online maps becoming more powerful and easier to use and gps units with built in maps becoming the norm, users are beginning to expect maps and map data in all sorts of applications. I produce automatic market reports which are distributed via email in pdf form and I would like to include annotated maps showing comparable locations and other data. Because including these maps in a distributed (not free) report would be a form of republication, I do not believe I can use google (terms of service) or yahoo's (terms of service) offerings. Are there other sources of free or low cost map or map data?"

Submission + - Avatars and their creators

Space_pingu writes: New Scientist has a cool gallery of people with their avatars. The images are taken from the 'Book Alter Ego: Avatars and Their Creators' and the narration is by the author Robbie Cooper, who spent years collecting his pictures. There are some interesting stories behind each avatar. Like the disabled boy who says Star Wars Galaxies has enabled him to meet people on his own term for the first time. Or the couple who begin each date by immersing themselves in the a virtual world.

Google Launches Online Spreadsheet System 485

Accommodate Students writes "In a move that is sure to cause even more discussion of Google's intentions to go head-to-head with Microsoft in the Office Suite arena, they have launched a spreadsheet. AP is reporting this as 'Google further invades its rival's territory.' You can share spreadsheets with other users and can chat while you're editing -- multiplayer spreadsheets! It can read both CSV and XLS formats." More from the article: "Google is targeting Office, which generated $2.95 billion in sales and $2.09 billion in profit in Microsoft's third quarter ended March 31. Microsoft plans a new release this year and is trying to get Office into more consumers' hands at a cheaper price while persuading businesses to buy higher-priced versions."

Will World Cup Streaming Cause Internet Meltdown? 312

MetaNick writes "It seems with every worldwide sporting event, e.g., Olympics, World Cup, we hear warnings of a "meltdown" as more and more broadband users attempt to stream video of the event to their browsers. And such predictions have just begun for the World Cup just getting underway: World Cup streaming to cause network meltdown, World Cup by broadband endangers networks. Has this ever really happened? Will it happen with this the World Cup just getting underway? I tend to doubt it. I looked for articles discussing how predictions of meltdowns did NOT come to pass, but I couldn't find any."

NASA to Start Helping Detectives 78

Roland Piquepaille writes "With a new photographic laser device developed to check damages on the Space Shuttle, NASA is going to help the FBI to investigate crime scenes. The Laser Scaling and Measurement Device for Photographic Images (LSMDPI) was designed to provide a non-intrusive means of adding a scale to a photograph, which is very useful when looking at an object in space when there is no size reference. But the LSMDPI, which weighs only a half-pound and can be attached directly to a camera's tripod, will also be used on Earth in crime and accident scene investigations. It also could be used for oil and chemical tank monitoring or aerial photography."
