Tell that to my cousin who is a farmer with thousands of acres in a flood plane, his house was built just prior to the 100 year bench mark flood, and did not flood then, however he can't add on to it now because the flood plain map says it is 6 inches below the flood plain. He can't even build a parking shed for his vehicles, because it would be a new structure in the flood plain which extends for many miles in all directions.

Have you priced a beach house lately, anywhere in the world? I know of one tropical island where beach front houses were selling for $25,000 - $30,000 25 years ago, those exact same small beach houses, now 25 years old have a resell value of $200,000 - $300,000 now that this vacation spot has been "discovered", and new construciton beach front houses start in the $500,000 range. The same is true in many other even non prime areas, the town I live in has seen a rampant increase in property values over the last several years, I know one person that paid $29,000 for an older 1920's house about 15 years ago, which was a good, but not great price in his neighborhood, at the same time the house next to his sold for about $32,000 and the very small ugly brown house across the street was on the market for many months at $19,000. The house next door with a few cosmetic upgrades (vinyl siding, privacy fence in yard, etc.) recently sold for $169,000, and the ugly brown one across the street which was just repainted and had a few other improvements is currently on the market for $139,000.

The big problem here is the definition of "climate scientist" is often those scientist that believe in climate change, those that don't are not awarded the titlte of "climate scientist" instead they are called "climate deniers" or worse

One of my pet peeves is the increase in named storms being used to "prove" AGW, when the reality is many storms are achieving named storm status that would never have been given that status 30, 40,or 50 years ago. These storms technically meet the requirements, reaching it momentarily while still far off shore then die back down below this magic level, yet retaining this magic "named storm" status, only through modern 24/7 sensors and tracking. In years past these same storms would have been unlikely to reach the magic "named storm" status unless a hurricane hunter air craft were to make a measurement at just the right moment, these hurricane hunter planes might only visit a storm that was a distant threat to land for an hour or two every couple of days if at all, with growing coverage as the storms approached land, but even at the best of times this coverage would be measured in a few hours per day.

First off this is NOT a virtual WALL, it may discourage crossings, but does not prevent them. There are many things in nature that do a far better job of preventing crossings, rivers for example, or even relatively small streams. Crossing these likely exert more stress than some flashes of light.

What is wrong is that you choose to live somewhere with such stupid regulations, if your neighbors feel the same way you should all get together and get things changed / vote people out of office. If they don't they one of you needs to move.

Nice idea, but I really don't think you will be allowed to conspire here for long before your post is removed of "modded" down. The only way to do this is move the conspiracy to some other tech site that enogh slash dot classic readers also visit to know about it. And once you have inertia to post random comments here pointing people to places that point to this new site. Otherwise it becomes too easy to censor the competition.

What slashdot needs is NOT readers, but well informed contributors that will add clarity to the topic under discussion, point out flaws in the topic, and provide EXPERT incite on the topic. Not petty bickering and random oppinion we so often see on other sites, and in fact here in recent years. There was I time I would read slashdot for the comments several times per day, now I check in once or twice per week and find I have to dig through more and more junk comments to find the jems.

Sounds more like Zenimax forgot rule number 1, keep the talent happy. id software without John Carmack is what, some intelectual property rights that they probably paid way over market value for. Sure they had other talent their, but how many of those people worked at id to work with John Carmack?

We went through this where I work we recieved net from a big name T1+ ISP , they sent us a letter saying they were going to discontinue T1 service in our area on some date (lets say July 1), and told us we needed to find another ISP. We did and managed to get changed over around June 20th, pulled the plug from the router on the original ISP connection and thought no more about it. A few months later we get a collection letter from original ISP collection agency saying we owned $4,000+ for service after July 1. BECAUSE WE HAD NOT CANCELED OUR ACCOUNT It ended taking having our lawyers write them a letter including copies of their discontinuation of service notice to get them to drop the matter.

$200,000 is not that much anymore, and the price will likely come down,keep in mind a 100+ day around the world cruise on a nice cruise ship like the QM2 already runs around $30,000 - $70,000 per person depending on cabin catagory, and they seem to have no problem selling tickets.

As I see it a Mars Outpost like the Outpost we have operated at the south pole for the last half century is possible in the foreseeable future (50-100 years), but a Mars Colony that did not require a constant lifeline of supplies just to survive is something best left to the sci-fi writers talking about the year 3,000.

The big question is will this trend continue
