You are correct the problem with our modern hospitals is they would quickly be overwhelmed, my wife was in the local hospital last week inI the ICU ward, we live in a small town of about 10,000 people, the local hospital serves a population of about 25,000 people, and the ICU ward has a total of 8 beds, 3 to 5 of them were occupied when she was there.

The myth about the U.S. not having any nuclear weapons after WWII is blown a bit out of proportion, from what records have been released it is true we were out when Fat Man detonated on Aug. 9th 1945, however the best estimates say we had 4 more by September, and around a dozen by the end of the year. This was not so much a matter of being out, but of rushing the first ones off the assembly lines into service right away.

Why do you worry about some yet to be born for a hundred generations person digging a shaft thousands of feet deep and killing themselves when they hit a nuclear waste deposit.

Is it really that easy to imagine a future culture with the tech to drill through thousands of feet or rock or reinforced concrete and not have the ability to detect raditiation, and plug the hole they made?

So now we get people priced out of any insurance coverage at all instead of only having catastrophic only coverage. Don't tell me it does not happen I know a man that had to quit his job of 42 years with a small business this week because his employee contribution for his noth that great health insurance had reached over $900 per month.
