Submission + - Game Design: Why Skyrim has awful Gameplay (gamasutra.com)

locater16 writes: The Elderscrolls Five, Skyrim. A highly praised game with an incredible amount of sales. And awful gameplay?
So says this blog post:

"Good gameplay comes from making interesting choices." — Sid Meir

"In an interview I believe I read Skyrim director Todd Howard spout much the same concerning combat. Unfortunately the meaning of this sentence didn't seem to come through to him. Skyrim's combat is full of choices that aren't interesting at all. Potions that restore your health are cheap, plentiful, and work instantaneously. There's no interesting choice in any of that. When you're hurt you just open your inventory and your health goes back up, there's no reason not to do so."

Submission + - A cure for the common cold? (mit.edu)

locater16 writes: Perhaps the most important medical break through since penicillin. Researchers at MIT have apparently created a new type of medicine that, in initial lab tests, acts as a general anti viral and has already proven successful at curing cells infected with the common cold, while proving nontoxic to uninfected cells. Of course the mean time from a discovery in the lab till a product is on the market is currently 13 years. So don't skip those yearly flu vaccinations quite yet.

Yeah, I suppose most people haven't thought of this. But I came up with the same idea 2 years ago, researched to see if I could patent it, and saw two were already filed as far back as 1996. I wonder if they bought the patents or are going to get sued.

Submission + - The New World (kickstarter.com)

locater16 writes: There's not nearly enough good Science Fiction these days. The universe has become too complicated, the future too onrushing for most to speculate at it's eventual impact. Or you could help people like this on kickstarter. The world needs less Twilight and more science. http://t.co/O2NXiVE
