Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Has my server been hacked? 2

mrintegrity writes: Hi, I rent a virtual server from a large and well known hosting provider. Recently I decided to re-image the machine as it had not been updated for a while and I wanted to use it for something completely different. The hosting provider gives access to a virtual serial console where you can log in and issue commands to re-image, reboot, etc the virtual guest. I chose to re-image with Centos5.6 (image supplied by them) and set a root password via the admin console. After logging in for the first time, I created a new user account and set a password for that user (*completely* different from the root password). Now the strange thing happened. I "su -" to root and enter the USERS password, voilà: root prompt.. thinking that was a bit odd I tried again and this time entered the root password: root prompt again. In fact, I can ssh to the machine as root@ and enter the root OR the user password and get a root prompt!!! Then I created a new account, not in the wheel group, "test2" and set a simple password. Ssh to the machine as test2 and can "su -" to root with either the root pass or the other users password (but not the test users password). WTF!? Long story short, I think the hosting providers centos image has been compromised. Is this likely to be true?

Submission + - Fan Fic Screenplay for Transformers (live.com)

Dantalion Naberius writes: So by now Transformers: Dark of the Moon has either been released where you're at, or will be soon. And it probably isn't very good, at best. Like a lot of folks (I think), after Revenge of the Fallen I thought 'wow, I could have made a better story than that'. Then I sat on my butt and didn't do anything until a few months ago. Now I've got a story in two 30-40 page 'parts' and a third on the way to complete it. It's rough, probably with tons of mistakes, but hopefully still beats the last Transformers film on story, if nothing else.

Since the Slashdot crowd was pretty excited when the first Transformers came out, and probably pretty disillusioned when the sequel reared it's head, I'm putting out the question: Moderately OK, Equally Bad, or Worse? Check it out at: http://bit.ly/m5FJSZ

Submission + - Free or open source for students? (hindu.com)

darkstar019 writes: As if the bundled proprietary software is not enough on hardware, many companies are coercing government in India to use their software for educating students. While this may be benefiting to the providers, students knowing only regional languages are kept outside the digital divide. Also, the spirit of sharing and innovation has to be inculcated amongst students right from their education.
