Submission + - 13 New Apple Security Vulnerabilities Addressed

An anonymous reader writes: Yesterday Apple released a new security update which is recommended for all Mac OS X 10.3.9 and Mac OS X 10.4.9 users. The update fixes security issues in bind, CarbonCore, CoreGraphics, crontabs, fetchmail, file, iChat, mDNSResponder, PPP, ruby, screen, texinfo and VPN. It is the first security update available since May 1st.

CSS of DVDs Ruled 'Ineffective' by Finnish Courts 222

An anonymous reader writes "The CSS protection used in DVDs has been ruled "ineffective" by Helsinki District Court. This means that CSS is not covered by the Finnish copyright law amendment of 2005 (based on EU Copyright Directive from 2001), allowing it to be freely circumvented. Quoting the press release: ' The conclusions of the court can be applied all over Europe since the word effective comes directly from the directive ... A protection measure is no longer effective, when there is widely available end-user software implementing a circumvention method. My understanding is that this is not technology-dependent. The decision can therefore be applied to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as well in the future.'"

IAmTheRealMike writes: This article offers an in depth but readable review of the current state of fusion research, along with a timetable for the future, a description of what still needs to be figured out and a fascinating look at what it'd take to scale up to worldwide commercial generation levels. Executive summary, by 2100 if all goes according to plan fusion might be able to generate 30% of Europes present day demand. The delay is largely due to tightly limited tritium supplies. Whilst a sustainable fusion reactor will produce tritium, it would do so only in small amounts so a reactor would take 2-3 years to produce enough tritium to "give birth" and start another one. It looks like even with the most optimistic assumptions, by the time Tokamak based fusion can meaningfully contribute we will likely be deep in the midsts of an energy crisis.

In fact, it has recently been reported at SpaceWeather.com that Comet McNaught is now visible in broad daylight! From the article: "It's fantastic," reports Wayne Winch of Bishop, California. "I put the sun behind a neighbor's house to block the glare and the comet popped right into view. You can even see the tail."

Why is it that in our society it is normal to watch TV for hours a day but as soon as you put that same individual in front of a computer playing a game for hours a day many vocal sources claim they are abnormal and run the risk of becoming psychotic and ill-developed?
I bet kids get more social interaction, problem solving skills, mental stimulation and hand-eye coordination playing an online game with other people than they will ever get watching TV. I know which one I'd rather have *my* kids doing more of.

I could not agree with you more. It seems you and I share almost the same life. College graduate, job in the software industry, independent and foreign film viewer (in the theather when they are offered), exotic food lover. Heck, I even go to the gym more days a week than not. Tonight I spent five hours playing one game, and if things go well, I will do the same tomorrow night. But I still get out, not because of any sense of obligation, but becasue it is sometimes enjoyable. In all fairness, though, there are many things I would set to the side so that I can play more games. It does not, however, affect my job, health, or relationships. You cannot define addiction simply by the number of hours spent in an activity.
