Submission + - Lost Martian data recovered by open source. (avaneya.com)

Phrogger writes: NASA launched the Viking Lander in 1975. This ambitious project was the first to successfully reach and photograph the surface of Mars. The public domain data was stored magnetic tapes, state of the art at the time but discovered to be deteriorating in the '90's. Even though the data was transferred to CD's, it's in a now inaccessible proprietary format that even NASA itself can't decode. Now "a small, pioneering, Canadian software studio" Cartesian Theatre, which is developing Avaneya , a GPL game for Linux, has reverse-engineered this format and released Avaneya: Viking Landing Remastered with the 14 gig historic mission data set on the DVD. Their original purpose was "initially intended as an internal research tool to facilitate the studio's need for reference material to assist in the production of lucid and highly realistic virtual environments for its ambitious upcoming cerebral science fiction game title, Avaneya . Public interest, however, inspired the studio to consider the data recovery challenge in a different light – as a creative opportunity to leverage crowd sourcing to offset costly research and development of the game, as well as in the direct interest of the general public."

This number is higher then a number for the general population. I think it has to do with those who would harm the children actively seeking out avenues to be exposed to them.

I think it has more to do with the future pedophile priest realising his inclinations and joining the priesthood with the hope and expectation that his vow of celibacy to God will prevent him from acting upon his illegal lusts. Thus I expect the priesthood would attract potential pedophiles, not so they could freely exercise their perversion, but so they could renounce sex and live a sin-free life. Of course celibacy is an extremely difficult vow to keep and flesh is weak. leading to priestly perversion upon children

Bible.com Investor Sues Company For Lack Of Profit 181

The board of Bible.com claims that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than to make money on the domain name, but an angry shareholder disagrees. From the article: "James Solakian filed the lawsuit in Delaware's Chancery Court against the board of Bible.com for breaching their duty by refusing to sell the site or run the company in a profitable way. The lawsuit cites a valuation done by a potential purchaser that estimated bible.com could be worth more than dictionary.com, which recently sold for more than $100 million."

Wolfenstein Gets Ray Traced 184

An anonymous reader writes "After showcasing Quake Wars: Ray Traced a few years ago, Intel is now showing their latest graphics research project using Wolfenstein game content. The new and cool special effects are actually displayed on a laptop using a cloud-based gaming approach with servers that have an Intel Knights Ferry card (many-core) inside. Their blog post has a video and screenshots."

Under the flourescent lights, no doubt. Some might say that your a looser! Their wrong, in a worser way than normal. You're comment inspires they're ire but you can likely find the compliment to it in any forum these days. It's pandemic.

Phew,I'm glad to have that out of my system. :-)

For the wannabe language-nazis:
It's fluor, not flour. A fluorescent lamp is coated with a fluor.

"Your" is possessive. "You're" is contraction of "you are", i.e. Your belt might be loose or looser. But you're probably going to be a loser if you gamble in Lost Wages.

Worser is not a word. Never has and I hope it never is. Things go from bad to worse to worst.

Their/they're/there: "Their" is possesive, i.e. Their car is green. "They're" is a contraction of "they are", i.e. They're there already.

A compliment is a nice thing said about you: "You look marvelous" is a compliment. A complement is a match or counterpart (in the literal sense) for something. A Philips screwdriver and screw complement each other. Or it refers to a roster: The platoon is at full complement.

"It's" is contraction of "it is". Its wrong to use it's in any other way.

Well, those are my pet peeves anyway. :-)

Patents

Submission + - How you can help undo the Novell - Microsoft deal. (lamlaw.com)

Phrogger writes: " Lamlaw reports on what we as individuals can do to help unravel the patent licensing agreement between Microsoft and Novell/Xandros/Linspire. In short, ask Novell/Xandros/Linspire for the relevant patent numbers. From the fine article: "If you do not have a patent number, you do not have a patent. And if you do not provide the patent number neither can you sue someone for having violated it, You do not have one. The patent number is a key piece of information. So, your job if you accept it, is to ask those vendors you may otherwise be interested in to detail for you just which patents apply to which of their products. You know, like you pick up a device off of the table and low and behold there is a big number on the bottom, right? You want to see the number. They have to know the number, right? Otherwise, what are they selling? Snake oil?""
