Comment Advocacy of a police state (Score 2) 230

Mark Rowley, the UK's national police lead for counter-terrorism, said, "[The acceleration of technology] can be set up in a way which is friendly to terrorists and helps them ... and creates challenges for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Or it can be set up in a way which doesn't do that."

Rephrasing that and removing the "mealy-mouth" what he is saying is "Tech companies who don't actively support the expansion of the police state by any means necessary are friendly to terrorists." This is a patently ridiculous statement for which he would be burned in effigy if he stated it openly ... which is why he couches it in vagueness.

That's not as crazy as it sounds ... I've saved about 35% on my heating bills on average ... in a 1200 sqft townhouse my heating bill(MN) was about 155/mth now it's around $100 ... assuming a comparably built 3600/sqft home, a $500/mth heating bill is not crazy huge ... 1/3 of that over 3 months is about $500 !!

Comment Breadth vs Depth. (Score 1) 809

In my experience .... people in STEM fields possess either depth of knowledge(specialists) OR breadth of knowledge(generalists). Very few possess a broad depth of knowledge(multiDocs!). There is just too much to know. Even when dealing with a generalist, the depth of knowledge possessed will rarely be uniform across the breadth, there will be deeper and shallower pockets.

Expecting a software developer(a specialist) to necessarily possess knowledge of encryption technologies is naive. For example a Java developer specializing in UI's is never going to have the need to delve into the world of file encryption. A network specialist is never going to need to know the difference between an Array and a List.

Decide what the position requires, advertise the job referencing the requirements, and focus on the job requirements when you are interviewing the candidates. Everything else is extraneous, a distraction, and a waste of everybody's time. .

Actually no the ST transporter converts the object into an energy pattern, beams the energy to a remote location and erases the pattern after the object is re-integrated into solid matter at the remote location. ... the object only ever exists as matter in one place at a time. which is why people are lost in transporter accidents.
