Comment Why is this even on Slashdot (Score 0) 128

From TFA:

Our choice for exploiting this bug is to create a .bat file in the Startup folder of
the user account which will execute our commands injected through +echo at the
next login of the user on the system. There is also an interesting scenario against
dedicated servers by specifying the motd.txt of the game as logfile and launching
the cvarlist command that will dump all the game variables in such file that is
visible to any player who joins the server. Team Fortress 28 is one of the most
played games based on this engine and it’s free-to-play.

They system is already compromised at this point. Why do we need the steam protocol?

Also, for the love of god, please stop calling these people security researchers.

Comment Why limit ourselves to the controller? (Score 1) 81

Why is Sony limiting this technology to the controller? The PS4 should actually come with an air conditioner changing the temperature in the room. So if the character is in a cold environment, you should be freezing. Similarly, they should also include a flame thrower in the PS4, so that when you get hit by a fire spell in the game, you actually start burning. That would be totally immersive!

I will gladly give my money to Nintendo for the Wii U. I am a gamer, with a huge passion for games. Finally Nintendo will provide next-gen gaming on their consoles. Nintendo, compared to Sony and Microsoft, is a company for gamers.

They dont charge you for online play (Looking at you M$), they dont charge you for additional storage by selling you some proprietary hdd. They dont remove features after the sale ( install other OS??) and they dont go in rage mode and start suing their customers. They also did not have any security breaches...

For me it is quite clear, if there will be a game which comes to all consoles, Ill be getting the Wii U version (unless there is a PC version ofc)

Comment Focus and Polish! (Score 5, Interesting) 1154

I love my linux world. The only part which I would appreciate is more polish in the software. Most software has a great set of features but it seems that all these suites are always missing the last 5% of development (e.g. making the application feel very polished).

To me it seems that the only way we can fix the desktop is to throw money at it. The last 5% of development work is usually boring (finding and fixing all the corner cases, etc...). I think that the only true consumer ready desktop right now is Ubuntu (yes, with the Unity interface). It has become a very polished and stable package with a lot of focus (maybe a bit too much?) on the right things. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge KDE fan (I contributed code), but to me it seems that it is missing the last 5% of development work (e.g. Kwin crashes occasionally, the panel wont stick to the top and will sometimes be in the center of the screen, Kwin seems to be slower than compiz...).

Canonical has the resources to provide a really solid desktop experience (and it already does) for most average users. For the rest of us, there is still Arch, Mint, Fedora, etc which allows for more customization. The problem is, that most people want their machine to just "work" and not tinker with the OS to just get it perfect.

Good job Canonical!

RTFA. It clearly says that it only records the images when it detects being damaged.

The computerized eyeglass processes imagery using Augmediated Reality, in order to help the wearer see better, and when the computer is damaged, e.g. by falling and hitting the ground (or by a physical assault), buffered pictures for processing remain in its memory, and are not overwritten with new ones by the then non-functioning computer vision system.

Totally agree. Also makes the site more accessible as visually impaired users may iterate over hyperlinks only.

It seems that you do not understand the issue here. This is not about you leaving your money on your porch.

This is about relying on someone else to keep your money safe. If they leave your money on the porch, then it is negligence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negligence)

those who go personally or bring property where they know that they or it may come into collision with the persons or property of others have by law a duty cast upon them to use reasonable care and skill to avoid such a collision.

And that indeed is punishable by law.
