This one has been tested by the community and works 100% of the time. It exploits activation functionality Microsoft intentionally built in for OEM system makers churning out thousands of PCs at a time who don't have time to activate each machine individually."

Symblized writes: Surprise, surprise. Steve Ballmer isn't exactly a huge fan of Apple's forthcoming iPhone. In an interview with InformationWeek, the Microsoft CEO bemoaned the phone's $499 price tag, lack of a keyboard and the hype factor that comes solely because of its brand, while noting that many other vendors are doing similar things for less. "I don't think this would be a very interesting announcement if anybody else had announced exactly the same product," Ballmer said.

RonMcMahon writes: "The CBC is reporting that in mid-December 2006 it was discovered that hackers got in to the computer systems of the discount retailer, TJX Cos. and stole data for transactions from 2003-2006.

Never heard of TJX? Well, you've been a customer if you've shopped at a Winners or HomeSense in Canada, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, A.J. Wright and Bob's in the United States or T.K. Maxx in Europe.

You can rest assured, though...Ben Cammarata the CEO of TJX says "...we believe customers should feel safe shopping in our stores." Ok. Perhaps he is right, if we shop with CASH."

Deathblow To a Voting Machine 140

SiggyRadiation writes "According to their newsletter (my English translation here), the Dutch group that 'doesn't trust the voting computers' has won a round against the industry and the civil servants that seem hell-bent on reintroducing voting machines — NewVote, made by SDU — that the Dutch minister of the interior has suspended. Apparently SDU provided 5 slightly different samples of its machine to the Dutch version of the NSA (well... the very humble Dutch version anyway) for testing purposes. Of those five, four machines emitted radiation in such a way that the votes cast could be monitored. SDU's NewVote received its final deathblow when it became clear that the one machine that stayed within the radiation limits used a green-on-red color-scheme for its screen. And that would be a small problem for the 4% of all men that cannot distinguish between red and green."

I have been a GAIM user for years and 2.0 seemed like a breath of fresh air. But it has now gone through 5 betas in over a year. New features have been added, yet I find it no more stable now in beta 5 than it was in beta 2. Gaim's homepage http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ lists some news, and the new Planet Gaim http://gaim.sourceforge.net/planet/ has some additional insights, but neither has been posted on since November."

Something of value to note is that Bill Weir does a solid job of not agreeing with or really responding to Thompson's comments regarding this.

It seems that Thompson's vigilante quest to destroy all violence and disrespect in video games is actually a one-man assault on Rockstar Games, specifically. As his intentions at this point are crystal clear, at some point you've got to wonder how long Rockstar will put up with this before finding a way to counter-sue for lost revenue, etc. Does anyone think he'll succeed? Is he trying to wear Rockstar down?"

The fully featured Opera web browser for the Wii was intended to be available for the launch of the console. Sadly it wasn't, but the good news is that you'll only have to wait until Friday to get a taster of what it can do.

A trial version of the Wii Opera web browser will be available for free from December 22. The final version of the Opera browser will be released at the end of March 2007 and will be free for all Wii owners until the end of June 2007. After this date, anyone who hasn't already downloaded the browser will have to pay 500 Wii Points.

An anonymous reader writes: I have not seen it announced anywhere on the Internets, but the Wii forecast channel is now active (in the US at least). Once you do a system update and enter your location, it sports some nice features like current weather, 5-day forecast, and the Globe. Globe is pretty impressive. It is a 3-d rendering of the earth (think Google earth with less detail) that you can use to check weather all over the world.

Now, we're happy to announce that all of the GWT source code is available, including the Java to JavaScript compiler and the debugging browser, under the Apache 2.0 license. If you'd like to see how we pulled off letting you avoid dealing with nasty browser quirks, you should take a look. More importantly, we're running this like a true open source project now: we'll be developing GWT completely in the open, as per our project charter. More info on the GWT blog."

arobic writes "European Space Agency (ESA) is putting recent pictures of the Earth (taken 2 hours before) online using Envisat. To avoid filling up their disks too quickly, only the bmp of the last 30 days are available but jpg are kept. Also, only region receiving light can be seen, which explains why no recent pictures of Thailand are available."

Journal Journal: 3rd Logic Board Failed

It happened in late January only a few weeks after my Apple Care expired but Apple honored the Apple Care anyway. I told the Apple employee what was wrong and he looked at my info saw that I had two logic board replacements already. Apple replaced the logic board and the hdd (that probably failed because of the logic board).

Lucky for me I had a backup of my hdd so I didn't lose my critical files and photos.
