Submission + - Jack Thompson: "I'm out to shut down Rockstar.

SyncNine writes: "Jack Thompson was recently interviewed on Nightline by Bill Weir, in which he can be heard stating that "I want to shut down Rockstar because they're run by a bunch of sociopaths and they're a one-company crime wave." Something of value to note is that Bill Weir does a solid job of not agreeing with or really responding to Thompson's comments regarding this.

It seems that Thompson's vigilante quest to destroy all violence and disrespect in video games is actually a one-man assault on Rockstar Games, specifically. As his intentions at this point are crystal clear, at some point you've got to wonder how long Rockstar will put up with this before finding a way to counter-sue for lost revenue, etc. Does anyone think he'll succeed? Is he trying to wear Rockstar down?"

Submission + - Wii web browser trial out on Friday

jtorry writes: "Nintendo has announced that the anticipated Wii web browser will be available to try from Friday, December 22. The fully featured Opera web browser for the Wii was intended to be available for the launch of the console. Sadly it wasn't, but the good news is that you'll only have to wait until Friday to get a taster of what it can do.

A trial version of the Wii Opera web browser will be available for free from December 22. The final version of the Opera browser will be released at the end of March 2007 and will be free for all Wii owners until the end of June 2007. After this date, anyone who hasn't already downloaded the browser will have to pay 500 Wii Points.

Submission + - Wii Weather Channel Goes Live

An anonymous reader writes: I have not seen it announced anywhere on the Internets, but the Wii forecast channel is now active (in the US at least). Once you do a system update and enter your location, it sports some nice features like current weather, 5-day forecast, and the Globe. Globe is pretty impressive. It is a 3-d rendering of the earth (think Google earth with less detail) that you can use to check weather all over the world.

Submission + - Wiimote cracked open

An anonymous reader writes: The guys at Sparkfun just did what everybody secretly wants to do with their new electronic gadgets: voiding the warranty to take a sneek peek at their internals! Here is the link to a very explicit naked wiimote along with many usefull remarks on it's electronics

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/present.php?p=Wii -Internals

"It features an 8051 core and RAM/ROM memory featuring the HID bluetooth profile and stack. Any chance they used a flash part that we can hack instead of the masked ROM (un-changeable) version? Highly unlikely. But lemme know if someone figures out how to get into the core. The small crystal is 24MHz. They make it look so easy don't they?"

Google Web Toolkit Now 100% Open Source 173

chrisd writes "When we first released the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) we were focused on building a great tool for people to build AJAX apps with. Now, we're happy to announce that all of the GWT source code is available, including the Java to JavaScript compiler and the debugging browser, under the Apache 2.0 license. If you'd like to see how we pulled off letting you avoid dealing with nasty browser quirks, you should take a look. More importantly, we're running this like a true open source project now: we'll be developing GWT completely in the open, as per our project charter. More info on the GWT blog."

Seeing the Earth Almost Live 143

arobic writes "European Space Agency (ESA) is putting recent pictures of the Earth (taken 2 hours before) online using Envisat. To avoid filling up their disks too quickly, only the bmp of the last 30 days are available but jpg are kept. Also, only region receiving light can be seen, which explains why no recent pictures of Thailand are available."

Journal Journal: 3rd Logic Board Failed

It happened in late January only a few weeks after my Apple Care expired but Apple honored the Apple Care anyway. I told the Apple employee what was wrong and he looked at my info saw that I had two logic board replacements already. Apple replaced the logic board and the hdd (that probably failed because of the logic board).

Lucky for me I had a backup of my hdd so I didn't lose my critical files and photos.

Journal Journal: i lied in my post

http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=104746&cid=8915809

i actually don't use a mouse pad but i use an ikea placemat. its a large flat smooth surface. i use that because with mousepad would roll of the edge and have poor aim while gaming. the placemat offers a large, less resistance surface area where i wont slide off while aiming around my mouse.

Journal Journal: fnIBook DIED, i begin my ordeal with apple care

11/16/2003 approx. 1am:
my friend plugs in his 15gb iPod to my 600mhz iBook so he can charge it overnight.

11/16/2003 morning:
my iBook is dead. i manually reboot and hear the startup tone but the LCD is still black. this same problem happened to my friend and i actually witnessed it, so i kinda have an idea that the logic board is dead.

Journal Journal: indie rock aint noise pollution

I started playing with iTunes more and added 7 new albums, two of them which I havent listened to since they were released which are Flying Saucer Attack's Distance and The Rachels' Handwritings. Currently, iTunes is holding 1.80GB/371 songs of songs. Also reviewed some of iTunes built-in radio stations, SomaFM supplied a healthy dose of indie rock/college radio

One of the games is BF1942 mod Eve of Destruction ... finally, a mod with decent helicopter controls. the version i played tonight was 12% release...man does that violate some copyrights. in anycase, i played the map "Charlie Cant Surf" (does that send a hint of a copyright violation?). Its all about the Hueys...I actually got a decent gunner who didnt bail out when
