Submission + - Hello Brave New World! 3rd Party Tests confirm Rossi cold fusion device (e-catworld.com)

chavez98 writes: 3rd party tests have confirmed that Andrea Rossi's E-Cat device does indeed produce anomalous heat energy at least one order of magnitude greater than conventional energy sources. There has been much debate as to the credibility of Mr. Rossi because he has a criminal background, but apparently he has been telling the truth about perhaps one of the greatest inventions in history of mankind.

Submission + - Cicadas and Prime Numbers (joshuasalvi.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Why do cicadas operate on 13 and 17 year cycles? Why do they come out all at once? This blog delves into the answers.

Submission + - Who is Avunit? The Hunt for LulzSec's Mysterious Sixth Member (ibtimes.co.uk)

DavidGilbert99 writes: LulzSec's star burnt brightly in the short period it was active, but things quickly turned sour when its core members began getting arrested. Last week three of the six core members were sentenced in the UK, but this only served to highlight the fact that one member of the group, known as Avunit, has been able to remain unidentified despite the FBI having turned the group's leader Sabu into an informant. Who is Avunit? And does he hold the purse strings of the group's Bitcoin wallet which could have up to $180,000 in it?

Submission + - LulzSec hackers sentenced beween one to three years (scmagazine.com.au)

Submission + - Billion-year-old water found under Ontario (nature.com)

ananyo writes: Scientists working 2.4 kilometres below Earth's surface in a Canadian mine have tapped a source of water that has remained isolated for at least a billion years. The researchers say they do not yet know whether anything has been living in it all this time, but the water contains high levels of methane and hydrogen — the right stuff to support life.
Micrometre-scale pockets in minerals billions of years old can hold water that was trapped during the minerals’ formation. But no source of free-flowing water passing through interconnected cracks or pores in Earth’s crust has previously been shown to have stayed isolated for more than tens of millions of years (paper abstract).

Submission + - Irish judge orders 'the internetz' to delete video (www.rte.ie)

edanto writes: A young Irish man wrongly accused of jumping from a taxi without paying the fare has secured a judgement from an Irish court ordering the video removed from the entire internet. Experts from Google, Youtube, Facebook and others must tell the court in two weeks if this is technically possible.
The thing is, the _video_ is accurate, it is only a comment that wrongly identified Eoin McKeogh as the fare-jumper in the video that is inaccurate. It's not clear if the judge has made any orders about the comment.

Submission + - 10 Star Trek Technologies That Are Almost Here 1

snydeq writes: 'The 23rd century may seem a long way off, but you'd be surprised by how much of the future predicted by Star Trek is already here. We already have handheld communicators (smartphones), sassy voice-driven computers (Siri), Geordi La Forge-like vision (Google Glass), and at least 4.5 billion Earth-like planets to choose from. (Whether any of them contain green-skinned alien babes in gold bikinis is still to be determined.) As for warp drives, transporters, phasers, and the rest? It will be here sooner than you think. Join us as we boldly go on a tour of Trek tech.'

Submission + - What Happens To Programmers At 25 and 45? (i-programmer.info)

mikejuk writes: A short while ago Slashdot reported http://developers.slashdot.org/story/13/04/29/203205/can-older-software-developers-still-learn-new-tricks on a study that showed that StackOverflow reputation grew with age and a few other obvious things but if you look closely at the data things are much more interesting.
There is a very big increase in reputation variance at about 45 years. Before this age the variance is small and lies around a regression line that indicates a steep increase in reputation. You could almost call the 20 to 45 the "driven" period where everyone is fiercely competing for reputation and accumulating it as befits their age and status.
Similarly until 25 the number of tags, measuring the range of interests falls then it starts to rise. Could this be the age of disillusionment — when the one true technology fails to deliver and they start to look around for alternatives?
So something happens around 25 and 45 to change the way programmers behave — but what?

Submission + - North Carolina May Ban Tesla Sales To Prevent "Unfair Competition" (slate.com) 7

nametaken writes: From the state that brought you the nation’s first ban on climate science comes another legislative gem: a bill that would prohibit automakers from selling their cars in the state.

The proposal, which the Raleigh News & Observer reports was unanimously approved by the state’s Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday, would apply to all car manufacturers, but the intended target is clear. It’s aimed at Tesla, the only U.S. automaker whose business model relies on selling cars directly to consumers, rather than through a network of third-party dealerships.

[The article adds] it’s easy to understand why some car dealers might feel a little threatened: Tesla’s Model S outsold the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8 last quarter without any help from them. If its business model were to catch on, consumers might find that they don’t need the middle-men as much as they thought.

Submission + - Google Commemorates Atari's Breakout 37th Birthday (mashable.com)

alancronin writes: In celebration of Breakout turning 37, Google has turned one of its search queries into the classic Atari game. In order to play it just do a Google Image search for 'Atari Breakout' and watch as the image tiles turn into the old arcade game.

Warning: This is addictive and will waste a lot of time.

Submission + - Carnivorous Plant Ejects Junk DNA (sciencemag.org)

sciencehabit writes: The carnivorous humped bladderwort, found on all continents except Antarctica, is a model of ruthless genetic efficiency. Only 3% of this aquatic plant's DNA is not part of a known gene, new research shows. In contrast, only 2% of human DNA is part of a gene. The bladderwort, named for its water-filled bladders that suck in unsuspecting prey, is a relative of the tomato. The finding overturns the notion that this repetitive, non-coding DNA, popularly called "junk" DNA, is necessary for life.

Oh wait, this is slashdot....let me rephrase.
