I thought the table valued function call was already doing that, but that does point to an answer- perhaps it's only fetching the one row before evaluating the concatenation.

Watches that do more than tell the time have been around for a long time. (And in fiction, James Bond, Dick Tracey, and Michael Knight all had notably high-tech watches.)
The new smart watches from Samsung and LG, without a phone connected via Bluetooth as backhaul, can still serve to show the time and to serve as alarms (and Samsung's can measure your pulse, too), but all the magic features (like searching by voice via the watch) do require a connection. They can't play MP3s or take pictures on their own, and they don't have built-in GPS. Even so, compared to the polarizing Google Glass, the new breed of smart watches are wearables that probably are an easier sell, even if this far the trend has been to replace watches with smart phones. (Android Wear has gotten a lot of attention, but Microsoft has their own upcoming, and Apple almost certainly does, too.) Are you interested in a smart watch, and if so, what uses do you want it for? If they have no appeal to you now, are there functions that would make you change your mind on that front?

Again, invoking a subquery is going to let the database engine know: "OK, get all that stuff first, and THEN work on the rest of the query."

I didn't explain the behavior adequately.
SELECT * FROM dbo.GetReferencedModelPointsByJobID(@JobID)
Returns someplace between 2-56 rows, depending on JobID
The second query does NOT error out, but is not returning a comma delimited string of all rows, but instead, in some cases, is returning only ONE row.
Since I'm using this to build a temp table, it doesn't error out until I attempt to fill columns in the temp table that do not exist.

Which "important event" do you have in mind here? Are you talking about when he opened up a network closet and slowed down the network traffic of an entire academic library for his own aims - when he could have downloaded all the same material from the desk where he worked his job? Or are you talking about when he got scared about the possibility of having to face trial, and took his own life rather than object to the laws that he was potentially facing trial under?

There is an argument to make that he was intentionally trying to make a martyr out of himself. He could have done what he did without opening up the network closet - which is the most significant charge that was filed against him. Yeah, the overall response was heavy handed without a doubt, but he wasn't exactly rational himself.
Granted, I guess this is a slightly more interesting story than facebook, the movie but still not that great.

Is there a threat (even a theoretical one) of the server going into an infinite loop based upon what you're doing?
It may be that the database engine requires the subquery to break the possibility of a cycle in the code, and sequence the computation.
