Comment We don't put it directly on the internet (Score 1) 106

That is so 1990's.
We install a VPN router to connect to the home network through that? So the only thing we need to secure are the VPN?
Everything else is insanity and who wants to spend all their free time checking up on all their appliances to see if they are secure with the latest patches? Most of them probably won't be and the hardware will outlive the software updates.
Will there be security updates for your heatpump in 10 or even 5 years? I doubt it. But it is damn to be able to turn on the heat or cold from the office.

Jesse Jackson To Take On Silicon Valley's Lack of Diversity 397

New submitter wyattstorch516 writes "San Jose Mecury News reports that Jesse Jackson will lead a delegation to HP's next board meeting to discuss the hiring of technology companies in regard to African-Americans and Latinos. 'About one in 14 tech workers is black or Latino both in the Silicon Valley and nationally. Blacks and Hispanics make up 13.1 and 16.9 percent of the U.S. population, respectively, according to the most recent Census data.' Jackson sent a letter to HP, Apple, Google, Twitter, Facebook, and others about meeting to discuss diversity issues."

I am not up to date on US broadband prices but wouldn't it be much cheaper to get a MiFi access point instead? But I guess if I had the money for a new Audi, I wouldn't care about 99$ a month for a overpriced broadband service. If it is all paid up for the price of the car hides the cost of the broadband.

Comment Some Facebook ads are just disgusting (Score 1) 111

I usually run adblock+ on my browsers so I don't see that many ads, and because of that, I not clicked on any ads.
But at one time I did log in to Facebook using a computer that did not have adblock+ installed and the ads were the type I really did not expect even Facebook to allow. It was really just porn ads disguised as someone sending me a personal message or whatever.
When they have no problems going that low, I feel even better about using adblock+.
For other reasons, I have not logged in to Facebook for 1/2 a year now and I have disabled my account so I don't know if this crap is still going on.

I just got a new iMac with maxed out configuration and 4GB video memory. So I can run everything at 2560x1440 with all graphics at full/ultra. A great computer although I think that the Fusion drive could benefit from PCIE SSD larger than 120GB when the SATA is 3TB.

- Civ 5, which is good fun but I rarely has the time.
- I liked the original Bioshock so I am playing Bioshock Infinite. It is ok.
- The new Tomb Raider but I kinda hate it since it seems to spend more time with story telling than actual gameplay.

I am hoping for a new Fallout game soon but I don't think it will be released for OS X and I am not going to buy and install Windows for just one game, although it is my all time favorite game.

Comment I quit my job (Score 1) 236

We had complex installations of Linux servers that were so old that patching them often required a lot of work to be able to compile the fixes.
After a steady flow of layoffs and cut downs, I was no longer able to keep up with even just the maintenance tasks and the list of critical things that needed fixes grew longer. And forget about trying to find time to do proactive things like planning new systems or capacity planning, since I now had to do everything myself.
So I had informed my bosses of the problems, even had it in writing although I hate that CMA crap. But I ended up quitting because even though a hacked web server would not be my fault, I just could not sleep well at night.

Of course then there also was the problem with the rest of the company growing tired of the lack of progress and quality of the IT department. They quickly forgot that the staff had been reduced to half and still expected the same service they got earlier on even though the official word was that everyone would be understanding that we didn't have time to do as much as we used to.

They offered me a raise if I stayed but it was really not about the money but about my health.
