Comment OMG, ZZZZzzz (Score 2) 174

I don't understand why people would want to watch other peoples mediocre gaming skills.
"Look at me as a play a level in some generic shooter". zzzz
There are a few exceptions where I want to see the graphics, maybe to checkout the gameplay or a hint/guide/learn from someone. But let's face it 99% of the gameplay videos out there are just filling hard drives with useless pixels.

And I don't get what makes people think you would want to watch them do something as ordinary as playing a game?

Man Trying To Fly Across the Atlantic On Helium Balloons 92

coondoggie writes "f you've ever wondered if you could fly just by holding onto a bunch of helium balloons over your head, well then you might understand where Accenture IT Technical Projects Manager Jonathan Trappe is coming from. Trappe today set out today from Caribou, Maine to cross 2,500 miles of Atlantic Ocean using 370 helium balloons slung under a small gondola. According to a DailyMail.com story, Trappe is relying on state-of-the-art weather data from the meteorologist who advised Felix Baumgartner on his record-breaking skydive from the stratosphere last year. The latest weather reports before the launch suggested winds would take Trappe to western Europe, though the exact destination would be hard to predict." Update: 09/13 14:08 GMT by S : The attempt is already over and unsuccessful. Trappe landed safely in Newfoundland, saying he was having trouble controlling the balloons.

Submission + - Where can I share vidoes with friends and family?

An anonymous reader writes: I have for some time shared videos with friends and family by uploading to YouTube, it is quick and easy to use and I have access to the videos no matter where go.

But I have grown tired of the constant fake "copyright violation claims" and have had a few rejected recently which makes me mad since I have taken great care NOT to use any content I dont have permission to on public videos.
The problem is that I use Final Cut Pro (and iMovie before that) and have used sounds and background music that came with these programs which apparently triggers a alarm somewhere from others who also have used those sounds.
Apple's SLA ( http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iLife11.pdf ) specifies that I can use the content that came with the programs for my own videos. Everytime I got hit with a copyright claim, I have written a polite dispute claim explaining this and including the link to the SLA but it seems that I no longer is enough.
So YouTube is now worthless for sharing videos.

Because of that I am now looking for an alternative. We are not talking about videos with thousands of view, just a place "in the cloud" where they are available to me and friends. I have been thinking about just running my own webserver on my ADSL but I only have 2 megabit in upload.

New Research Could Slow Human Aging 180

schliz writes "A team of scientists from Japan and New Zealand have helped baker's yeast live 50% longer than usual by artificially stabilizing a genetic sequence called ribosomal DNA. The study's authors say that rDNA is a 'hot spot for production of the aging signal.' Because rDNA genes are very similar in yeast and humans, they say their experiment is a first step towards anti-aging drugs."
