Submission + - Mojolicious Perl Modern Web Framework 1.0 released (kraih.com) 2

Kvorg writes: Sebastian Riedel, author of the trend-setting Maypole MVC web framework for Perl and later creator of the Catalyst web framework, released version 1.0 of his new Perl web framework: Mojolicoius, Web in a Box.
Mojolicious has been designed to be small, concise, complete and extensible. With no dependencies beyond core Perl 5.8.7, it offers a light API for simple applications, a complete API for MVC designs, a command-line API for scripting, a powerful built-in templating system, asynchronous web client, DOM parser with CSS3 selector support, HTLM5 compliance with websocket support and many, many other features.
Mojolicoius works well with existing modules, is well documented and has a number of plugins and applications developed for it on CPAN and GitHub. Your application can be deployed with a built-in stand-alone perl server or with any other method of your choice. Mojolicious has been proven in many production environments and is the recommended way for Perl hackers to hack into HTML5. http://mojolicio.us/

Submission + - Cosmic 'Bullets' Traced to Galactic Black Holes 1

dork writes: The Pierre Auger Observatory announced that active galactic nuclei are the most likely candidates for the source of the highest-energy cosmic rays that hit Earth. Using the Southern Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, the largest cosmic-ray observatory in the world, spanning over more than 3000 square kilometers, they found that the sources of the highest-energy particles are not distributed uniformly across the sky, linking the origins of these "cosmic bullets" to the locations of nearby galaxies, hosting active nuclei in their centers. These galaxies are thought to be powered by supermassive monster black holes that are devouring large amounts of matter. The exact mechanism of how particles get accelerated to energies 100 million times higher than achievable by the most powerful particle accelerators on Earth is still a mystery. A fraction of recorded events is also available through a public online event display.

Submission + - Clue to highest-energy cosmic rays discovered (auger.org)

dork writes: The Pierre Auger Observatory announced today (with impressive press coverage) that active galactic nuclei are the most likely candidates for the source of the highest-energy cosmic rays that hit Earth. Using the Southern Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, the largest cosmic-ray observatory in the world, spanning over more than 3000 square kilometers, a team of scientists from 17 countries found that the sources of the highest-energy particles are not distributed uniformly across the sky. Instead, the Auger results link the origins of these mysterious particles to the locations of nearby galaxies, hosting active nuclei in their centers and thought to be powered by supermassive black holes that are devouring large amounts of matter. The exact mechanism of how they can accelerate particles to energies 100 million times higher than the most powerful particle accelerator on Earth is still a mystery. A fraction of Pierre Auger Observatory measured events is also available through a public online event display.

Submission + - Principles and Practices of Scientific Originology (insight-journal.org)

mma writes: ""This presentation is a satire of the current obsession with intellectual property, innovation and originality that plagues the field of medical image analysis. The presentation makes the point that most Journals and Conferences focus on Originality and despise Reproducibility and Verification, demonstrating great disrespect for the essential elements of the scientific method. The practice of "peer-review" is offered in most cases as an insufficient substitute for the actual verification of reproducibility. In a nutshell, this presentation intends to brings awareness to the fact that authors of papers are treated by Publishers as if they were writers of Novels instead as reporters of scientific findings. In that confusion, authors are required to be "original" (as if they were writing Novels or Plays) instead of being required to report "reproducible" findings. Such practice obliterates critical thinking and erodes the basic principles of the scientific community.""

Submission + - Ohio University finds key to getting RIAA to stop 7

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, has found the key to getting the RIAA to stop inundating it and its students with "settlement" letters. According to the university's student online publication, the university paid $60,000, plus $16,000 per year "maintenance", to Audible Magic, the business partner of the RIAA's all-purpose expert witness Dr. Doug Jacobson, for its "CopySense" filtering software. Once it made the payments, the letters stopped. This of course raises a lot of questions as to the 'disinterestedness' of Dr. Jacobson, whose deposition in the UMG v. Lindor case was the subject of interesting Slashdot commentary."
