I agree. The speedo sticky label was a nuisance, but eventually everyone here in oz "got" metric measurements. I still think in feet and inches, but measure in metric, especially those metric volts and amps on my DMM! Lots of things and info from the US are marked in both imperial and metric anyway.
My kids (eldest nearly 40) know nearly nothing of the old imperial system...

Submission + - Microsoft bans Firefox on Windows ARM (cnet.com) 1

Kjella writes: In another case of "if you can't beat them, exclude them" Microsoft has decided to not allow third party browsers on Windows ARM. The reasons cited by Microsoft's Deputy General Counsel David Heiner are: "
  • ARM processors, which power virtually all iOS, Android, and Windows Phone smartphones and tablets today, are different from the x86 chips that power PCs. The chips have new requirements for security and power management, and Microsoft is the only one who can meet those needs.
  • Windows RT — the version of Windows 8 geared for ARM devices — "isn't Windows anymore."

Submission + - Microsoft bans third-party browsers from Windows on ARM (extremetech.com) 1

MrSeb writes: "In a twist that's very reminiscent of Microsoft's naughty nineties, Mozilla has revealed that Windows RT — aka Windows 8 on ARM — will only support one web browser: Internet Explorer. While Firefox will technically be able to run in Metro mode on Windows RT, it will be so crippled as to be unusable; in "classic," Desktop mode, third-party browsers such as Firefox won't be allowed to run at all. This restriction seems to stem from Microsoft locking down some vital APIs in Windows RT, so that it's impossible to build a browser that competes with Internet Explorer. At first blush this sounds like a classic ploy to stymy the opposition and regain market share — and for all I know, maybe it is — but there are also a few logical reasons for Microsoft's decision. From the get-go, Microsoft has been leery of developers porting x86 code to ARM, in case these ported apps don't have the efficiency and stability that a low-power (and battery-powered) ARM tablet requires. It's for this reason that Microsoft didn't offer some kind of OS- or hardware-level x86>ARM translation. For users, however, the implications are extensive: Windows RT won't have browser add-ons, or web apps, or the ability to use WebGL sites. In the long term, if Windows on ARM is a big success, we could even return to the mid-'90s digital dark age, where more than 90% of web surfers used Internet Explorer — a fate worse than death itself."

Funny, I got the impression that Raspberry Pi was yet another extension of the BASIC Stamp/PICAxe/Arduino idea; a neat hardware wrapper around a microcontroller, but in Pi's case a processor with enough grunt to run Linux.
Maybe not a robotics platform particularly, but who knows what crazy repurposing of the board is just around the corner?
(Disclaimer: I haven't got a Raspberry Pi, but a motley collection of Arduini and friends, steppers and techo stuff!)

Submission + - The naming of the "Ice IX" banking trojan (internetsecuritydb.com)

AlexDomo writes: The naming of the new Ice IX banking trojan is quite interesting; there are a number of sources from which the developer could have been inspired to name the new trojan Ice IX. I've listed these in order from "most likely" to "least likely" to have been the inspiration.

1. Ice 9 is a fictional computer virus from the film "The Recruit" (2003) which could erase hard drives and travel through unprotected power sources; possibly erasing data from every computer on Earth.
2. Ice 9 is an album by Russian rock band Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii, two songs from which won the Russian Golden Gramophone award twice. The band's name loosley translated means "glitches in your brain".
3. ICE is a well known cyberpunk reference to "Intrusion Countermeasures Electonics" — software which works to prevent hackers getting access to sensitive data.
4. In cryptography, ICE (Information Concealment Engine) is a block cipher published by Kwan in 1997. The ICE algorithm is not subject to patents, and the source code is in the public domain.

These are just the top four... eight additional references are listed in the original article here.

astroengine writes: "In the wake of the Russian Progress vehicle crash shortly after launch on Aug. 24, a chain of events has been set into motion that could result in the decision not to fly astronauts into orbit. If this happens, the ISS will be temporarily mothballed before the end of the year to avoid landing astronauts during the harsh Kazakh winter."

sourtry writes: It might be too early to discuss about the DLCs as the game is still more than two months away from its release, but Microsoft wants to give Xbox 360 owners something exclusive. Hence comes this announcement that two planned DLCs for Skyrim will be timed exclusives to Xbox 360. It shouldn’t be a surprise since Oblivion was only made available to Xbox 360.
