Submission + - Why Japan's Electric Grid Can't Cope (ieee.org)

An anonymous reader writes: The earthquake and tsunami took more than 27 gigawatts of power generation out of commission, causing the Tokyo Electric Power Company to institute rolling blackouts throughout eastern Japan that will continue through the summer's peak electricity use. But there's plenty of generation capacity in western Japan. Why can't they just send it over? Chalk it up to a "historical accident," in which the two halves of the national grid can't directly exchange power. Eastern Japan runs on 50-hertz electricity, while western Japan uses 60-hertz.
