The main problem is that the railways are now run as profit. Many companies have been bought out by a few large companies (similar to the banks), and when that happened, a LOT of experienced railroad employees were fired. They were replaced with inexperienced people who get paid a lot less, but also make dumb mistakes. The fact that this was an oil shipment means little. They are actually pretty lucky, because a lot of rail cars carry industrial amounts of poison gases. THAT would have caused a lot more problems than an oil spill.

I still prefer books, but movies have improved dramatically over the last 10 years. Books still provide the best bang for the buck, though. There's no artificial limit based upon CGI, investors, or available actors. While there certainly are some very poor sf books, with a simple Google search, you can find a list of hundreds of books that are all very, very good.

I'm not sure why, but most recent UI redesigns have just been crap (Ubuntu, Gnome3, Yahoo, Deviant Art, etc). What is it with the UI guys that they just have to go with a bunch of unnecessary bling, that hides the actual content and daily use features?

I'd also recommend Mint Mate to people who want their Linux distro to Just Work.
