Comment Re:Mortgages are public records (Score 2) 294

Any real estate that has a mortgage will have a lien on the title. That lien will be recorded along with the title at a public records office so the owner cannot sell the property without clearing the lien.

The details of what gets recorded in the lien are a matter of state law, but certainly there will be some description that the lien is in fact a mortgage.

Lots of land doesn't have a mortgage on it. In fact my home doesn't have a mortgage. I think I saw a statistic that some 30% of US homes are free of mortgages.

However that has nothing to do with a title history for a piece of land. That title is on file at a government office somewhere, assuring that the history of ownership is recorded, and there is a record of the taxes on the land. If the taxes don't get paid the government will take title and generally sell it to recover taxes owed.

I want a 4K 40" OLED display for photo work. This would be something that would come a lot closer to the capability of the sensor in my camera than anything than I can buy now.

In addition the high resolution would be great for displaying large amounts of text, that is for programming.

28" with crappy color gamat and a ridiculous dot pitch isn't close to what I want.

Since I use the same equipment for streaming as I do playing a DVD, the ONLY difference in my household is that of the DVD player motor and optical pickup vs what it costs to run the stream across from my wifi router to the receiver. For argument's sake I'd say that difference is negligible.

In terms of delivery of the DVD, that's a matter of how much it cost in energy to make the DVD, package it and deliver it via UPS from Amazon, amortized over the number of times I play the DVD. I don't think that is really any more than the energy cost of the streaming infrastructure - servers, bandwidth etc. which is in total pretty large, some 30% of the entire internet is consumed by streaming I hear.

Really I think this story is a complete crock.

Any article that cites a rape rate like this is obviously being written of-the cuff with no research behind it. As a polemic rather than an argument it should be discarded as the waste of bandwidth it is.

I agree with this completely. I know the impact of not being able to drive on the elderly from how it affected my parents. Now that I've turned 60 I can see how it is likely to affect my wife and myself in ten years or so. I am certainly hoping that easier to drive and ultimately autonomous vehicles are going to lead to improved quality of life in the future.

Amazon is not close to being a monopoly; they sell about 30% of all books.

Another issue is that of course Amazon wants to keep authors writing new books. Without a good flow of new titles Amazon won't sell as much and their business will decline.

What Amazon does want is a larger share of the profits in the book market. A good part of this is Kindle of course. Getting customers hooked on Kindle vs physical books is a big deal.

Yeah, a couple of years ago I just gave up and dumped all my small engine appliances:

Rototiller
Weed wacker
Hedge Trimmer
Chainsaw
Edger
etc

They were all getting impossible to deal with. With lithium batteries I found I could replace them all even the rototiller with battery or corded stuff. Much lower maintenance and the power is enough.

I still have a tractor though. Tough to get 20+ HP from a 110 outlet. I mostly mow and blow snow with the tractor.
