Comment Re:I dont know why PETA want cows extinct? (Score 2) 418

A simple fly eats his meal on the spot without much forethought beyond following a smell. He might agree with you, but in regards to the advanced, technical, cheating spider who meticulously spins his death web, premeditating his trapping, killing, preservation, and storage of food for later. Would we be more of a natural predator if we just waited for cows to get caught in our sticky ropes?

(I really know nothing about flies, so someone feel free to rip my guesswork to shreds.)

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Handy mental methods to remember multiple, unique site passwords?

erlegreer writes: For some years I've been using variations of a base password that web sites inform me is "medium" complexity. I use the same base and vary it slightly depending on the site name. Theoretically, my passwords for Slashdot and Google could be j@cksj1ll and j@ckgj1ll. I am well aware that a rogue SysAdmin or intrusion exploit could reveal my simple pattern and grant access to all my site accounts, and also that my Wikipedia and WoW passwords are the same. Plenty of apps can keep local, locked password stores, but I'd prefer to recall passwords without having to unlock local storage each time. I'm not the king of memorization, so I'm wondering if there are handy mental methods to create and remember multiple, unique site passwords. I might have to settle for carrying around a laminated matrix with some method to pull unique strings from.

Submission + - Install a Security System in Your Home? (freehomesecuritysystem.net)

mcmbath writes: "You always want Security System in our home to secure us, but it might provide evidence to be a fake idea. It only takes one burglary to ruin your confidence about the security system of your home and property. It also ends up with a big loss. Therefore, it is highly advisable to install a home security system before any unfortunate accident happens."

Submission + - US Television Network CW Embeds Smartphone in Magazine Ads (g4tv.com)

Revotron writes: Readers of Entertainment Weekly might be shocked to find their magazine is a good bit heavier than normal this week. US-based broadcaster CW placed an ad in Entertainment Weekly which uses a fully-functional 3G Android smartphone, a T-Mobile SIM card, and a specialized app to display short video advertisements along with the CW Twitter feed. Writers at Mashable were willing to geek out with a Swiss Army knife and a video camera to give us all the gory details as they tore it down piece-by-piece to discover the inner workings of CW's new ad.

Submission + - 1,000 MPH Car Passes First Test (isciencetimes.com) 1

amkkhan writes: Scientists aiming to create a car that can break 1,000 mph cleared a large hurdle yesterday when they successfully tested their rocket engine. The engine will power the supersonic car known as the Bloodhound SSC — meant to become the fastest car in the world.

The British team tested the engine in an aircraft shelter in Newquay Cornwall Airport, originally designed to protect fighter planes from bombs. Although the data hasn't fully been analyzed, the researchers said the engine reached 30,000 horsepower during the 10-second burn. Given enough time, they expect the engine to reach 80,000 horsepower and 27,500 pounds of thrust.

The United States has about 2.8 times as many guns per capita as France. (FTFY)

1 times a number is that number. (1xN=N)
1 times less than a number is 0. (N-N=0)
2.5 times less is 1 times less (0) minus 1.5 times the number. (-1.5xN)

I doubt most people who use "times less than" really mean what they say.
