Let's translate the OP's question:
I have this insecure by design environment, while there are more secure by design environments available (yeah, probably not completely secure, but much more secure than what I'm using now). I'd like to patch my grossly insecure environment to get at least an illusion of security instead of considering the alternatives.

But the client's browser is not likely to have the company's certificate as trusted, so they still have to accept an unknown certificate. Just not the device's, but the manufacturer's.
Do you think average joe would actually verify his printer's certificate for authenticity? :)
This is only likely to happen in a large corporate network.

Also, give grades according to the number of overtime hours the kids stay in school, not according to what they manage to learn. You want all A-s, better spend 90 hours per week in school - you can even do 120 if you sleep under your desk and are careful when you shower.

Even if it doesn't require batteries, why would I want to have an online profile updated with what I've shat today?

Exactly - you can, like in the US, get a free/reduced price phone with an X year contract if you want. All the carriers would be happy to sell you one.
There are two differences: one, when the X years end, they MUST unlock your formerly subsidized phone for an insignificant fee (i think i paid 10 euros last time).
Two, you don't have to get a subsidized phone. There are 5 million places that would happily sell you a new, carrier free phone to use with any GSM carrier.
The carriers are also required to unlock phones not attached to a contract for free - i.e. if you pay full price, it has to be unlocked - but no one's crazy enough to buy a full price phone from them, any other store would be cheaper :)
