Submission + - Critical Infrastructure Initiative panic reaction to Heartbleed: ESR (itnews.com.au)

Bismillah writes: "They have backers with money, but no plan and no staff. We need to work out a way to either merge or not to step on each other," ESR believes.

ICEI being the Internet Civil Engineering Institute [site locked currently] that Eric S Raymond and others were about to launch soon, but then Heartbleed came along.

Submission + - Microsoft drops support for IE 8 (microsoft.com)

Billly Gates writes: With the death of XP it is no surprise if other ancient software with it such as IE 6 no longer become supported. However, IE 8 is still the de factor standard browser right now for the majority of internet users. This is especially in China and enterprises world wide who are not ready for HMTL 5 yet and need support for unsigned ActiveX controls and older encryption standards for specific sites.
Microsoft no longer supports IE 8 and will perform security updates according to its default homepage for first time IE use.

Where I work we use unprotected mode as it is to run sites designed for IE 7 and for state governments who still use quirks mode for Medicare processing.

Now IE has it's first known vulnerability since the EOL for both Windows XP and now IE 8. Should we IT professionals worry? We were given no advanced notice unlike XP!

Since corporations like my own use IE 8 with low rights mode with sandboxing and protected mode turned off so they can run compromised certificates for ancient java I wonder if we will get patched?

This is much scarier as we handle HIPPA and credit card information and can be hacked.

Submission + - Goodbye Carwash! Nissan Develops a Self-Cleaning Car 1

Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes: Nicole Arce reports at Tech Times that engineers at Nissan are using a "super-hydrophobic" and "oleophobic" paint finish called Ultra-Ever Dry on the new Nissan Note supermini that can repel water and oils, as well as dirt, dust, mud and grit. The paint uses nanotechnology to create a thin air shield above the surface of the car that makes rain, road spray, frost, sleet and standing water roll off the car without tainting its surface at all. "By creating a protective layer of air between the paint and environment, it effectively stops standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the car's surface," says Nissan's press release. Nissan says it has no plans of making the special paint job a standard on factory models but it will consider offering the self-cleaning paint as an aftermarket option. Nissan is now attempting to determine if the material is durable for long-term use on vehicles — and if it will hold up in different weather conditions around the globe. The Japanese automaker plans to test its custom technology this summer in Europe, with researchers based in its England technical facility using a Versa Note for testing.

Atari denied it.

When prompted key Atari figures would not comment and the lead programmer said there is no way we would have done that.

Locals say otherwise.

I was interested and there maybe more gems there (like ET was a gem) like the experimental controller that never hit the market, documents, and other materials. Centipede was found there too. It looks like they just cleared a whole warehouse and dumped it.

So yes this qualifies as an urban legend.

You can. In India.

The fact that MBAs and CIOs are the ones whining make me always suspicious who of course get quoted in all these articles and probably contribute to them. How convenient this propaganda can now be used and passed around to politicians to increase H1B1 visas as a response.

Sadly many with years of experience now can be as good if not better than the native ones anyway so go cheap.
