Submission + - Julian Assange Applies For Asylum in Ecuador

bs0d3 writes: Julian Assange has requested political asylum and is under the protection of the Ecuadorian embassy in London. According to justice4assange.com, the Stratfor e-mail leaks have revealed that the US has applied for an extradition of Assange from Sweden which is stored in a sealed file since over a year ago. Assange alleges that it will become unsealed once he is extradited to Sweden. Ecuador is seriously considering Assange's extradition request.

The rest of the world will continue its course while lawyers battle against each other in US.

US is giving a nice warning for those who want to invest in their country: "What a nice product you have, it will be a shame if someone sue you for *insert patent/copyright* infringement".

As a brazilian myself, I saw the news about it in the last few days in our local media.

Foxconn is in Brazil for serveral years. The main problem of water was reported as a temporary supply problem from the public water system, not Foxconn fault.

The second biggest problem was reported about the buses being overcrowded. This is most probably because Foxconn hired a lot of workes recently to increase its production and the guy responsible for transportation made a lousy job to handle the extra workers.

Also, the union president said the strike is very unlikely because Foxconn said it was already taking care of the situation. They aren't striking for salaries, bonus, or anything else related. The union just made a warning for Foxconn to act quickly.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 had the same problem. Unfortunately, EA will get away from this since they were not expecting to have a Mass Effect 4. The Mass Effect brand is damaged, so what? They made a quick buck and that's how it works there. I saw studio after studio being sucked dry by EA and Bioware is no different. I suggest you all never pre-order something EA branded until you get player comments about it. You can't even trust "professional" game reviews of the game (like it happened with ME3).

Why waste time checking the source integrity if you can get all the information you need from Fox News? They even do the job to filter 'bogus' information for me! Right? RIGHT?!?? What? Fox News isn't reliable? I don't trust you! You are probably a terrorist from the internet!

Submission + - Deadly H5N1 flu studies to stay secret... for now (reuters.com)

Edsj writes: WHO spokesman said an agreement had been reached, after a debate, to keep details of the controversial work about the highly pathogenic H5N1 secret until deeper risk analyses have been carried out.

The scientists, led by Ron Fouchier, who made the study, still want to release the full paper at some future date for public viewing, but for the time being, the NSABB got what it want.

Submission + - European Commission will investigate Samsung (reuters.com)

Edsj writes: The European Commission will investigate whether Samsung is abusing its dominant position when sought injunctions in various EU countries against competitors, saying they infringed some of its patent rights, which are considered essential to European mobile telephony standards.

Samsung is involved in a patent tussle with Apple in courts across 10 countries including the United States, Australia, France and Japan.

The European Commission is able to fine companies up to 10 percent of their global turnover if it finds them in breach of EU competition rules.

Bill Gates On What Business Can Teach Schools 272

Hugh Pickens writes "Most workplaces build a system to evaluate worker performance, provide feedback that yields information employees can use to improve, and then hold employees accountable for results. However, Bill and Melinda Gates write that in the field of education, we really don't know very much at all about what makes someone an effective teacher. 'We have all known terrific teachers,' write the Gates. 'But nobody has been able to identify what, precisely, makes them so outstanding.' For the last several years, the Gates Foundation has been working with more than 3,000 teachers on a large research project called Measures of Effective Teaching to get a better sense of what makes teaching work (PDF) so that school districts can start to hire, train and promote based on meaningful standards. 'Once the MET research is completed, we hope that school districts will work with teachers and their unions to create fair and reliable evaluations that reward teachers who are effective and identify and help those who need to improve. When that happens, we believe that districts will be on the cusp of providing every student with an effective teacher, in every class, every year.'"

Submission + - BEA: Flight 447 Pilots 'lacked training' (bbc.co.uk)

Edsj writes: France's BEA authority said pilots had failed to discuss repeated stall warnings and did not have the training to deal with the hazard. Interesting conclusion since the altitude-loss alarm was activated and deactivated several times, contradicting the real status of the aircraft.

Submission + - Neverwinter Night Forums Hacked

bannable writes: Tonight, BioWare sent out an email to account holders on their NWN forums:
"We recently learned that hackers gained unauthorized access to the decade-old BioWare server system supporting the Neverwinter Nights forums. We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers’ data and launched a thorough ongoing evaluation of the breach. We have determined that no credit card data was compromised from the servers, nor did we ever have or store sensitive data like social security numbers. Our investigation shows that information such as user names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, mailing addresses, names, phone numbers, CD keys and birth dates from these forum accounts on the system may have been compromised, as well as other information (if any) that you may have associated with your EA Account. In an abundance of caution, we have changed your password to ensure account security."
