Comment HP turning into IBM (Score 1) 178

I expect them to start hiring consultants tomorrow. I think HP figures that they can't compete against Android and iOS, even if WebOS is better technology there's no way they can build up the developer interest to make a competitive ecosystem of tools and apps. Essentially WebOS is OS/2. It's sad to see so many good people be forced out. WebOS was a great accomplishment.

Submission + - Google develops Master API - Web Intents (chromium.org)

GeneralSecretary writes: "Google is developing an API to allow Web Apps to easily share information with other Web Apps with a unified API. For example there would be a default aPI for sharing things which would work with services like Google+, Twitter, and Facebook using a single predefined API. This is like OLE for the Web."

Submission + - Invent the medical tricorder win $10,000,000 (marketwire.com)

GeneralSecretary writes: "Ever watch Star Trek and say "Hey, I could build that", well now's your chance. Qualcomm and the X PRIZE Foundation have teamed together to offer ten million US dollars to whomever can invent "a mobile solution that can diagnose patients better than or equal to a panel of board certified physicians", the Tricorder X Prize. Hopefully the Tricorder will join the cell phone, MRI, and tablet computer in the list of Star Trek devices that are now part of our lives."

There's no evidence that Iran is NOT making nuclear weapons. According to the the NPT, to which Iran is a signatory, Iran as obligated to prove to the rest of the world through full IAEA inspections that they are not making weapons. Instead, Iran has hidden facilities and kicked out inspectors. The IAEA has truthfully reported that their is neither evidence of weapons nor proof that they are not making them because the IAEA does not have full access. We must assume that Iran is making the weapons, we cannot wait for a smoking gun because the smoke from this gun is a mushroom cloud. If Siemens did help build Stuxnet I applaud them.

Creating human rights where there were none weakens the entire human rights movement. The whoile point of human rights is that they are extremely basic and transcend human differences. They go beyond cultural differences. The Internet is not needed for survival as evidenced by the fact that humanity survived for many years without it.

Today Is EPOCH Day 15000 81

A great number of people wrote in to note that it's EPOCH Day 15000, so don't expect the post office to run, and I'm pretty sure the markets will be closed. And presumably your employer gave you a paid vacation day?

There has not been much serious abuse of the law since it was created. While the potential for that abuse is still there I have not seen convincing evidence that the innocent have been terribly harassed because of this act. The war is still on. Numerous attacks have been foiled in the last several years primarily due to good intelligence. I hope someday that we will again live in a world where these laws are not needed, but I don't think that day has come.

"what role should Amazon and other public-cloud service providers play in preventing customers from using their services to commit crimes?"

The same role that Ford Motor Company is responsible to fill in preventing the use of it's vehicles as Getaway cars from scenes of crimes.

Actually some car companies have systems to slow down cars remotely if they are in a police chase. Perhaps Amazon should then slow down servers that the police inform them are involved in illegal activities?
